My husband and I are doing our best to populate the U.S.!! :o) Our next is due in August.
I'm not sure who posted the response about mom's not being able to work and raise kids, too, but most of my friends work from home or have their own home-based business. There are lots of options out there!

Part of the reason for reduced population. Planned Parenthood's budget. Total revenue with government money:
Fiscal Year / Total Revenue / Govt. Grants & Contracts
2003-2004 ... $810.0 million ... $265.2 million
2002-2003 ... $766.6 million ... $254.4 million
2001-2002 ... $692.5 million ... $240.9 million
2000-2001 ... $672.6 million ... $202.7 million
1999-2000 ... $627.2 million ... $187.3 million
1998-1999 ... $660.7 million ... $176.5 million
We can still have 1/4 acre for each of world's population in the State of Texas. It has not changed since the 1970s

Anyone else notice that although the author says the population of the earth will be shrinking "soon," she does not give the predicted year. She talks only about shrinking populations in selected countries.
Such negligent reporting only gives a black eye to those of us in the Clean Plate Club, who are looking forward to the day when the earth's resources will be completely used up.
To combine the idea of population growth with abortion and birth control is sleazy and dishonest to boot. It's possible to care about the unborn and the born.

Some would say that economics is the root of this problem, that woman's labor is needed to make money in the work force in order to provide luxuries, vacations, a second car, etc. to the family. Therefore, less children.

Anyone who hasn't yet read P.J. O'Rourke's All the Trouble in the World, should. This is all well covered there.

At the risk of being accused of being an abortion-supporting greenie, I will express my belief that the presence and detrimental effects of overpopulation are fairly obvious. One does not need to be an "environmentalist-wacko" to observe the strain exerted upon the world's natural resources by the present population. One does not need to be a member of NARAL to observe that the poverty and misery of much of humanity is continuously perpetuated by people having kids they can't afford to feed, educate, etc. Any American living in urban or suburban areas can observe the impact of growing populations upon their quality of life.
The issue of overpopulation in general should be considered separately from the more specific issue of declining Western birthrates and increasing Muslim birthrates.

Very interesting article, Salvation.
I haven't read all of the posts, but noting post #8, I would recommend that "America Alone" by Mark Steyn answers many of the questions about zero and negative population growth of nations throughout the world and why it poses a danger to every indigenous culture of those nations.
The book is excellent and frightening at the same time. Western Europe believes immigrants are going to replace children of their respective native cultures to ensure their pensions and other government needs are funded. However there is no guarantee that this funding will continue once a country is taken over (and it doesn't take a majority) by an immigrant population.
The book I referenced above paints a grim, albeit accurate picture of our world if only certain ethnic groups, particularly those with a professed desire for conquest, are the ones reproducing at a rate that exceeds zero population growth.
