They kid may have felt guilty, that he was 'bad' and deserved the abuse, that on one would want him etc etc etc....
Kids in these situations don't have hope, they don't trust anyone.
all of that makes perfect sense to me, so when others are perplexed by it, i am astounded at their lack of empathy.
