I saw that episode - some cruel, unwarranted comments about the way contestants look in what is supposed to be a singing contest.
American Idol is not just a "singing contest". These contestants have to have the "entire package" to be considered an "idol". Good singers are a dime a dozen. Having good looks and talent is necessary to become a performer that people will pay to see. Ugly people that can sing get jobs as backup singers and such.

Ruben Studdard, American Idol winner Season 2
I love AI - it's the most cheesetastic show on TV. It's really not a talent competition at all. It's more like a game show where the top 2 finishers become overnight celebrities and multi-millionaires. Great fun!!

Good singers?
They are rare.
Yellers, bellowers, flailers, wailers, jumpers, crumpers etc....all kinds of noise comes out of those mouths,
but really pretty singing voices?
Rare.
Very rare.
I mean singing voices. Music being sung.
And since I listen to music, give me an ugly person who can sing over a booby bimbo who sounds like she got stuck in the mammogram machine.
