WASHINGTON - That age-old stereotype about dangerous women drivers is shattered in a big new traffic analysis: Male drivers have a 77 percent higher risk of dying in a car accident than women, based on miles driven.
And the author of the research says he takes it to heart when he travels his wife takes the wheel.
I put a mitt in my mouth and ride shotgun, said David Gerard, a Carnegie Mellon University researcher who co-authored a major new U.S. road risk analysis.
The study holds plenty of surprises.

I bought it at Logan to have something to do while wating for a flight. There I was sitting in the terminal by myself, screaming with laughter and tears running down ny face. I'd get a three hour cavity probe from the TSA for such behavior today.
Just my opinion, of course, but for example, if a male is tailgating you, you can be pretty sure he is doing it on purpose, if its a female, there is a good chance that she doesn't realize how close she is. I believe there are studies to back this up as well.
So, do sum it up, Guys are Jackasses, Girls are Dumb.
As they say at home, Moonman, the books sounds wicked pissah!
I always HATED that saying.
"The women cause the accidents. Talking on the cell phone ,putting their make-up on, driving 40 in the fast lane."
And when the damage is done, drive away to get their nails done.
My sister-in-law told me all about her new Blackberry but warned me it wasn't a good idea to read or send out e-mails while driving down the Interstate, confiding to me that she almost had an accident while doing so. She has no job, no responsibilities and no pressing need to use the device, period, let alone while traveling at 55 mph. Clueless.
MSNBC pandering to their woman dominated demographic.
MSNBC could have just as easily written a story saying the "girls should throw rocks at boys" are scientifically correct.
Yeah, so do I. But I had to use it!
Boston drivers are the worst and the rudest and the dumbest.
They must be the same people running the cash registers in Boston.
You know, you are positively correct! Rudest cashiers I have ever encountered.
Are they counting the men who have heart attacks in the passenger seat while their wife drives?
This study doesn't seem to take into consideration the young "20 to 30 something" women in fast cars and SUVs talking on their cell phones with one hand and a cigarette in the other.....can't tell you how many "close calls" we've had because these bimbos don't pay attention....
Women do tend to be better drivers and it has nothing to do with their command of an auto. They tend not to drive as fast/aggresive or take as many risks as men and in particular young men. Nor are they as likely to drive drunk as men.
This isn't always the case though. The worst drivers in my area are asian women. Many of them don't come close to driving the speed limit and instead go 5, 10, or 15 mph under it which is dangerous to everyone.
"Also, in general, Americans are lousy drivers. "
Compared to most countries i've driven in this isn't true. If you spend any time in Africa, South America, Italy, or India you will see that our drivers are much, much, much better than those of most places. Much more cautious and much more in control.
We unexpectedly had a dusting of snow on the roads overnight. But no one expected it and the roads were in horrible shape this morning. It took me 1 hr 20 minutes to get to work that would take me 25 min on a good day. And I had to watch the road. For a number of miles, a man in the car behind me yacked on his cell phone. Women indeed!
You aren't serious, are you? The Weather Channel has been hyping it for almost a week. It certainly was forecast! I know people from NC to Ohio back to NYC expecting it, so i have no clue how your area would not have expected snow.
Not in our area the way we got it.
