Bush open to idea of pardon for former U.S. Border Patrol agents who shot Mexican drug dealer

WASHINGTON: President George W. Bush left open the possibility of a pardon for two U.S. Border Patrol agents serving federal prison sentences for shooting a Mexican drug dealer as he fled and covering up the crime.

Bush said "there's a process for pardons" and the case has to work its way through the system. In an interview with KFOX-TV in El Paso, Texas, Bush said the White House will review the case, and he urged people to "take a sober look at the case."

"People need to take a tough look at the facts, the evidence a jury looked at, as well as the judge. And I will do the same thing," he said.

Several lawmakers have urged the president to pardon former Border Patrol agents Jose Alonso Compean and Ignacio Ramos for the shooting of Osvaldo Aldrete Davila, who retreated to Mexico after he was shot and later admitted he was transporting marijuana while in the U.S. illegally.

The agents began serving their sentences Wednesday — 11 years and one day for Ramos and 12 years for Compean. Both were fired after their convictions on several charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, obstruction of justice, and a civil rights violation.

Rancor over the convictions and sentencing of the agents has been simmering for months, and the two have become a cause celebre among conservatives and on talk shows. Their supporters have said they were defending themselves and have called them heroes. The agents' prosecution occurred as the issue of illegal immigration was being debated in Congress and amid campaigns for last November's midterm elections.

Rep. Duncan Hunter, a California Republican, introduced a bill Thursday calling for a congressional pardon of the agents. Congress has never issued pardons to anyone convicted of a crime.

These agents did some very underhanded things, they covered up evidence, knew the perp was unarmed and they fired 12 rounds from their shot guns into the back of the suspect as he tried to flee.

Foreign Drug Traffickers are engaging in chemical warfare against the people of the United States. They poison and ruin the lives of Millions of young people in our country.

Shooting them is wrong?

What they really needed was better marksmanship.

Geez, let's try to figure this out.

What's more immoral...smoking a joint with a friend or buying them a drink or putting a bullet in their head?

Do I really have to define what makes a disjointed and warped moral perspective?

This was a major blunder in political thinking.

You got that right.
And we saw this coming.

What we're looking at now in terms of Democratic leadership for the next few years and even worse, the prospect of a Hillary or Obama in the White House is frightening.

These people don't have a clue as to the reality of the world we live in and the dangers we face as a nation.

I'm afraid this country is in for a very rude awakening.

More half-assed "facts" from the incomparable Jorge. 1. Border agents are, by the nature of their jobs, called on to be to a degree directly tied to action, BOTH judge and jury, in the sense of assessing probable cause for pursuit, etc.

So in your mind it's open season on illegals.

Guess this explains why these border agents were thrown in jail.

So much for advice from morons who tell them they are rightfully judge, jury and executioners.

I wouldn't get so excited about Bush saying that he is considering the pardons. Remember this is the same guy that said Rumsfield was going to stay with him till the end and we know that didn't happened.

Funny, here in Wilmington, NC we just had a police officer exonerated for shooting and killing an 18 year old kid through the front door of his house on the suspicion that he stole a Play Station 3 game set. We had some cops in Atlanta, GA who killed an old lady on a botched drug raid, and I don't think anything happened to those officers. I guess the only time that an officer of the law is held accountable for shooting a suspect is when the suspect is an illegal Mexican.

NO, in YOUR mind it's open season on illegals.
And I already explained how and why they were NOT
"JUDGE, JURY AND EXECUTIONER". YOU are the one who said they were. Do you function with a COMPLETE brain? If not, figure out where you might have lost or misplaced it, so you might go back and retrieve it. Your reasoning and/or comprehension does not seem to improve or sharpen from week to week or month to month. You really oughtn't take everything as if the truest way to look at it is rhetorically, setting up your own straw men in arguments so you can spit in their face.

FIRST you post...

supremedoctrine "1. Border agents are, by the nature of their jobs, called on to be to a degree directly tied to action, BOTH judge and jury...

THEN you post;

supremedoctrine "I already explained how and why they were NOT "JUDGE, JURY AND EXECUTIONER".

Make up your mind. Are you confused or skitzo or both?

Do you function with a COMPLETE brain?

Cute. Actually I graduated first in my college class with a perfect 4.0 GPA..... and can easily whip you any day of the week with half my brain tied behind my back.

Regardless, seeing how you repeatedly contradict yourself, I could just as well wait until you finish arguing with yourself.

How would you know what my posts are... week to week or month to month?

I don't even recognize your screen name.
You are obviously WAY TOO obsessed with me.

You need to get a life.

A 4.0 grade average and you spell it "skitzo".
FYI, "judge, jury, and executioner" is ONE thing, as you used it. You can't be one or two of them , you have to be all of them.I explained the outer limits of being the first two for a BA, and since no one was executed, it is moronic to even bring up the word. But that's too subtle for a distinction for someone who boasts of his grade point average. Why not tell us your IQ, while you're at it? The point is, simply, you have nothing to say, your "opinions" sound like those of a self-satisfied adolescent, who has not experienced anything in life.
Please, don't bother responding, I am gonna ignore your next "snappy comeback". You're a child/

I spell it any freakin way I want.

Can somebody untangle this convoluted mess for me?

Can you possibly post two sentences in a row without contradicting yourself?

But that's too subtle for a distinction for someone who boasts of his grade point average.

Right. I doubt I'll ever be able to grasp the genious of embracing two opposite and contradictory positions at once.

I'll leave that to you.

I think it was 133. So I am not a genius.

The point is, simply, you have nothing to say,

Which explains why you've responded repeatedly to my posts. You crack me up.

your "opinions" sound like those of a self-satisfied adolescent, who has not experienced anything in life.

I'll bet you anything I've experienced far more in life than you have time left for.

Try me.

"People need to take a tough look at the facts, the evidence a jury looked at, as well as the judge. And I will do the same thing," he said.

Oh please! Like any of the drug smugglers recently pardoned had their cases reviewed and the president actually came to the conclusion that they were really innocent despite their convictions. You can pardon anyone as far as I know regardless of guilt. Pardon these men Mr. President, and please spare us the garbage about what the jury thought. The law is an ass.

Hey, there are plenty of web forums out there that don't have any "right wing assholes" on them. Why don't you go join them? If you need ideas, I'll send you a link or two.

Here are some websites where there are no evil right-wingers:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/

http://www.dailykos.com/

None of those right-wingers zarf hates at those sites.

This would have been (assuming it happens) far more meaningful and WAY more impactful for all Americans, if there had been someone like Congressman Tancredo on hand at each prison to intercede - presidential pardon in hand - as the Border Patrol agents turned themselves in.

I'm not saying Bush doesn't get it, but sometimes Bush doesn't get it.

Iraq is not the only important issue in the world.

Nor the only issue Americans care deeply about.

Waffling further on this, helps NOBODY.

These men should be freed. This weekend.

No need to trash the president.....on this issue. Seems he's given the public plenty of ammo in other areas.
