WASHINGTON As the House prepared to impose new fees on oil and gas taken from federal waters, some Senate Democrats said Wednesday that royalty breaks for energy companies ought to be abandoned.
House Democrats are confident they can approve an energy package Thursday which includes a conservation fee on oil and gas from the Gulf of Mexico, seeks to recoup royalties lost because of a government error in drilling leases in the late 1990s, and rolls back several oil industry tax breaks.
Part of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's priority agenda for the first 100 hours of Democratic control of Congress, the energy proposals targeting highly profitable oil and gas companies are expected to breeze through the House.

Uh, Democrats working hard to ensure energy prices remain high, and American producers remain hampered.
The higher gas prices, which will be the direct result of this dumb bill, will encourage us all to move into caves and bike to work.
Jeezey peezey - are the 100 hours up yet?
What in blazes is wrong with these people?
Do they hitchike back to their districts during recesses, or just walk?
What is the IQ requirement of a Limousine Liberal these days? 2?
Let me take a wild guess on this -
When prices at the pump rise because of new rat taxes, the typical American idiot will blame the oil companies for price gouging. And no amount of logic or proof will change their minds.
They're breathing?
Those Bushes would do anything to help their Big Oil buddies.
in the late 1990s,
Uh, uh, uh, it's still Bush's fault.
It is idiotic to call this a "break". The Federal government freely signed a binding contract with these companies. Those were the terms. If the person responsible for preparing the contract screwed up, fire him/her. If they coerce the companies out of this contract our government is no better than Venezuela.
With smoke and mirrors. It's looks and sounds good, but the bottom line is that nobody thinks the oil companies are going to lose money. You'll pay me now or you'll pay me later.
The only thing this is for is to mask over something that will never happen, oil companies giving up money.
SMOKE AND MIRRORS, NOTHING MORE, NOTHING LESS.
This is a 9.7% net profit - in probably the best year ever up to then. It is a big number but that it is because it is a big business - the foundation of the entire world economy.
For comparison, GE had profits of $16.4 billion on revenues of $157.2 billion for 10.4% net profit.
The Gov of Alaska proposes AGIA, Alaska Gasline Incentive Act so the natural gas pipeline will be built. If the previous Gov had been retained in office the construction contract would already be signed and the project underway. If Congress bleeds off oil profits to this extent, who will fund the construction? FedGov?
Late 1990's, huh?
Government error, huh?
I guess it's written that way because they wouldn't want to mention that the mistake happened under Clinton!
Right out of Animal Farm. George Orwell would only marvel at this sleight of hand.
This is bigger than oil revenues. What's at stake here is whether or not a contract with the Federal Government is worth the paper it's printed on.
