Bush won't reauthorize eavesdropping program Wed Jan 17, 2007 2:10 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush has decided not to reauthorize the controversial domestic warrantless surveillance program for terrorism suspects and to put it under the authority of a secret special court, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said on Wednesday.

it would have gone right to the SCOTUS.

and we had a decent chance at a 5-4 win.

President Bush has had main one goal since 9/11, which has been to ensure to the best of his ability we can all sleep safely in our beds at night, so I prefer to give the President the benefit of doubt till I know more, instead of immediately jumping on the bash-bush bandwagon as so many here do to get their daily quota of jollies.

you are arguing that a position Bush took and asserted for years, which we all supported - that we now should all embrace the REVERSING of that decision.

how many sides of this issue do you want to be on?

The know it alls, can't be bothered to think it thru.

What else is new?

Some people will never learn that no matter what Bush does, the initial reporting will have already been spun to the negative.

Dems will crow out-loud, but inside they will be quite pissed off at this.

What is worse, are those FReepers who buy the spin without ever researching the facts. They think that because the Dems were screaming FISA all day long, that somehow the Dems were involved with FISA, which is nonsense. The Dems screamed for FISA because it was the only thing they could scream.

What Bush has done, is keep whatever he does SECRET, yet FReepers complain out of ignorance, instead of figuring out that Google is their friend.

As I said I prefer to give President Bush the benefit of the doubt till I know more.

With the slew of attorney's and expert advisor's he's surrounded by I would never assume I or any other ordinary Joe Blow off the street, including 'talk show hosts', who don't have all the facts, know better.

Perhaps Bush has concluded that there will not be any domestic support for the war on terror until we have at least one more 9-11.

Yeah Pukin, this is all about Spector, the judiciary committee and the fact that SCOTUS was not likely to issue a favorable ruling, which is where this was headed..

I'm not totally sure about SCOTUS, but Spector just gave a speech on the Senate floor and he is still not totally satisfied. he wants even more explanations. He has Bush's judiciary and recent appointments in the palm of his hand and is forcing Bush to cancel this program.

Add to this, the fact that the programs secrecy was key to the effectiveness, and that Bush's article II powers are limited to short terms of time traditionally, this issue has worn it's self out and they had to relent.

I don't think it will do any more damage, now that the program is out in the open. I don't see any reason to doubt the wisdom of this decision.

Mind numbed robots are us.....it would seem.

Ah, I despair. But then there are some who think first, and understand that the power is now in the hands of those who would wish us attacked again if it helped their cause.

The President's burden is made so much heavier by the constant criticism and the results of the past election when the brilliant folks on the right thought it was a good idea to punish the President.

Well they punished America, the troops and our allies. And they're still trying to defend their betrayal.
