COLUMBIA, S.C. - Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record) said Tuesday he hopes to patch things up with conservative Christian leader James Dobson, who recently said he wouldn't support the Republican's presidential bid under any circumstances.
In a radio interview with KCBI, a Dallas Christian station, Dobson argued that McCain didn't support traditional marriage values and complained that the campaign finance legislation he co-authored hurt Christian broadcasters.
"Speaking as a private individual, I would not vote for John McCain under any circumstances," Dobson said on KCBI.
The 2002 McCain-Feingold campaign finance legislation stifled "Christian radio" and "kept us from telling the truth right before elections," Dobson contended. "He is not in favor of traditional marriage and I pray that we will not get stuck with him."
During a campaign stop in Columbia, S.C., McCain said: "I'm obviously disappointed and I'd like to continue and have a dialogue with Dr. Dobson and other members of the community."
McCain has said gay marriage should not be legal but has angered some conservatives with his opposition to a constitutional amendment banning same-sex unions. The Arizona senator said the issue should be left to the states.
"I'm happy to say that I've established a dialogue with a number of other leaders," including the Rev. Jerry Falwell, "Purpose Driven Life" author Rick Warren and Dr. Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention.
McCain has reached out to conservatives he once crossed. Last May, he spoke at Falwell's Liberty University in Virginia. In 2000, Falwell opposed McCain's campaign for the GOP nomination and supported George W. Bush. At the time, McCain labeled Falwell and others on the right and the left as "agents of intolerance."
During his 2000 presidential bid, McCain also criticized Bob Jones University, a Christian fundamentalist college, for its ban on interracial dating.
In a GOP debate with Bush, McCain said that given the opportunity to speak at the school as Bush had, he would have said: "Look, what you're doing in this ban on interracial dating is stupid, it's idiotic, and it is incredibly cruel to many people."
McCain said last year that he wouldn't turn down an opportunity to speak at Bob Jones.
Since 2000, the school has lifted its interracial dating ban.
We're going to see the typical "run to the right" by the GOP candidates during the primaries, and the careful dance to the left for the general election.
It happens every time.
"agents of intolerance."
I'm beginning to think we need an 'agent of intolerance' in the White House.
We need leaders who don't have to run anywhere...except straight at the enemy to destroy them.
Ah ambition. What one will do to feed the need, can sometimes be head turning.
The tack however strikes me as paticularly grotesque. McCain loathed these folks, personally traducing them, and now he is at their feet. It is all just over the top for my taste.
Don't waver Dobson! McCain's a traitor to the party. I don't care if it's supposed to be 'his turn'.
not to mention stomach churning. No matter what, I'm still not voting McCain.
I think he still loathes them.
it appears you have to be nice to people you hate in order to get elected anymore.
An egregious violation of the First Amendment, they're now looking to expand CFR into so-called "grassroots movements" encompassing the Internet, possibly Free Republic even.
I recieved a fundraising letter from McCain today in the mail, and it immediately went into my shredder
PING!
"Speaking as a private individual, I would not vote for John McCain under any circumstances,
My sentiments exactly.
"I'm happy to say that I've established a dialogue with a number of other leaders," including......"Purpose Driven Life" author Rick Warren.
Truly not impressed. Rich Warren is purposely and selfishly driven. McCain and Warren - same mold."
Not gonna do it ole johnny boy. I do not think you will win the primary. You should have been a conservative.
Yeah, right. Go ahead, Johnny boy, try to suck up and pretend to be the right hand man of Jesus. You posturing puke.
Imagine that. A Republican saying something should be left to the separate and sovereign states, as per the Constitution and the 10th Amendment. Well that's a new tact for them I suppose...
And Dobson, the Christian 'conservative', gets upset about it. This is the problem I have with his sort. I don't disagree with his values but not everything was intended to be determined by the 537 idiots in Washington. Much was intended to be left to the states. And if we are ever going to return to the Constitution and its limitations, as 'conservatives' claim, it's going to have to start somewhere. Conservatives should not want, desire, nor need for there to be federal legislation for everything.
Now all the 'our morals are going to hell, we need a law' lot may flame away...
Hopefully this internet thingy will help us remember their past treacherous behavior.
Naked ambition is just one reason why this country can't afford a McCain presidency.
Bad move. They normally come with postage-paid envelopes. Write "You Get Nothing!" with a big, fat sharpie, then drop it in the mail. That way he gets to pay postage.
There are other, more creative ways to use post-paid envelopes as well.
But if you are sucker enough to believe that McCain's record shows he is actually for states rights, then please feel free to flame back...........
