This has happened before, (see Stephen Stayner) almost identical. Stayner was abducted in 1972 I think he was 7, went to school, was able to leave the house, etc. for seven years but never went to the police out of fear from his abductor. Finally his kidnapper (Kenneth Parnell) wanted a younger kid so he kidnapped another kid, 5-year-old Timmy White . When Stayner came home and found White there he decided to help him escape before he could be molested. They made to the police where Stayner told them he "thinks his name is Stephen", and that his "dad" kidnapped this kid.

Stayner was re-united with his family and was given the reward for rescuing White.

The case against Parnell was stronger for Stayner's kidnapping so he spent the next several years having to re-live his kidnapping in court and it about drove him crazy. He attempted suicide several times until he met a wonderful girl who he married and had two children with. Sadly, Stephen was killed a few years later by a hit and run drunk driver.

Even odder, Stephen's younger brother Cray grew up to be a serial killer (see Yosemite killer Cary Stayner)

Under the circumstances of extreme fear that Stephan lived with for years, this was a significant example of courage on his part. Amazing. I doubt any one of us can imagine the kind of psychological bondage that keeps a young person like that under the control of his captor. It defies our ability to comprehend.
