"It is impossible for a person to be decapitated during a hangin" It's not only possible but it is common for a head to be pulled from the body during hanging, much as a head can be wrung from a chicken. The possibility of rope beheading can usually be reduced by carefully adjusting the slack in the rope according to body weight and only allow the body to only fall far enough to ensure the neck will be broken.

Several of the Nürnberg war criminals that were hanged wound up having their heads pop off in the process. Had Göring made it that far, he too would probably have lost his head, given his rather significant girth.
