They also rebel at different ages. It's possible he would have in the time. Who knows?

Look at Shawns's face and his eyes and his behavior and then think about Elizabeth Smart and they're demeanor when both were rescued.
There's something missing. At least that's what I've observed.
They don't looked overjoyed at being rescued, they aren't demonstrative, their smiles look almost phony, like they're still playing a role. And they're embarrassed about what they've been through.

As much as everyone would like to show them as being typical teenagers by their asking for McDonalds and doing other typical teenage things, they aren't typical normal teenagers.

As a normal teenager, I, too, rebelled against my parents.

But I also wasn't scared they were going to shoot me.
