By the way, on Fox awhile ago, a neighbor said he heard yelling and "thumps" from the apartment where he was being held. The kid was probably beaten regularly.

I think kidnap victims start to believe that they've been so changed by what they've endured that they could never return to their former lives. Their parents couldn't accept them, and even if they did, the vicitm would never be the happy, normal person he was before. At some point, they feel hopeless and start to adapt.
