Kidnapper told boy his parents did not want him

Kidnap victim Shawn Hornbeck was "brainwashed" into staying with his abductor after being told his parents no longer wanted him.

His kidnapper also threatened to shoot the 15-year-old after snatching him off the street.

Friends of the teenager have revealed Michael Devlin, 41, had at least three guns in the apartment where Shawn was held captive.

Tony Douglas, 15, who was Shawn's best friend, said: "We both knew there were guns in the house. Michael told us that he had the guns and were for his protection."

Shawn's stepfather Craig Akers, 45, has revealed his son's life was threatened by Devlin while he lived with him in a ground floor flat in Kirkwood, a suburb of St Louis, Missouri.

"Must be a lib. Cant debate without resorting to name calling. Well lawdud there is this thing called common sense and I would hazzard to guess that you thought OJ was guilty also."

Name calling? You, through some perverted use of logic, tie me in with NAMBLA (which is a despicable organization) and you say I am resorting to name calling.

This alone proves your limited mental capacity.

BTW, I am not sure what your comment about me thinking OJ was GUILTY means but I attribute it to the same lunacy.

You have established your credibility .... NOT.

Now, STFU and go away.

That is my sentiment as well, but fortunately/unfortunately (depending on which side of the law your on) we have procedures. I would think in this case, the trial is a technicality, as Shawn will be a witness and the boy was caught with him, as well as Ben's testimony. I have also seen cases (On 48 Hours) when I felt that the defendants were absolutely railroaded by the justice system and convicted wrongfully. Hopefully the system will correct itself for them. Let's hope devlin's attorney will make sure it is fair, but not try to get him off no matter how it is done. As I said earlier too, I hope if they enter an insanity defense the state has a guilty and insane law so that he will get mandatory jail time.

It still doesn't warrant the NAMBLA stuff in your posts. The name calling on the thread and the site that I have seen lately bugs me.

I know Kirkwood MO very well and it has changed quite a bit over the years - I had a late night/early morning delivery route there for a while back in the early 90's - 7 days a week. I was out on my route the same night some kid got popped in someone's driveway on west side of Lindbergh. I handled the east side of Lindbergh including Meacham Park.

I don't recall Imo's being there in Kirkwood in the early 90's. I do miss their wonderful cheesy pizza and I have not had one for years. I no longer live in St. Louis but I do get up there fairly often.

I can see how Shawn would not trust the police, no doubt they knew Devlin and they probably went into Imo's often to eat pizza while on break. I am sure that Devlin let Shawn know that he saw the police regularly at the Imo's and that they would be on his side instead of Shawn's. I also sure that Devlin felt comfortable enough with local police to where he knew they would not question him about Shawn if they only saw him with Devlin every once in while. I am sure he told police also that he was his godson and that the boy was threatened to keep a low profile when the police were around.

No record, other than traffic offenses (which may have been the result of the impromptu fund raisers the various municipalities run from time to time). He was not the guy from Utah or Texas as first reported -- he was a local St. Louisan who was adopted by the the Devlin family who have posted a letter to the families of the boys through their attorney.

Only thing I'm shocked by at this point is the plea of not guilty -- now that's going to be interesting, I must say, or it takes incredible chutzpa.

I won't judge his parents either. From what I saw the other day, they are wonderful people and will work through this together with Shawn.

I wonder how some of our Uber FReepers (freepers who think they could handle any situation perfectly, as would each and every one of their family members cause they raised 'em right, dammit!!) would look after going through Hell for so long.

Who knows WHAT Devlin thought?! Yeah, Imo's is next to Spencer's Grill-- still serves the best breakfasts in town. You wouldn't recognize the place now -- they tore down the Target and put in Lofts and townhomes starting in the $600,000.00 range on the property. Unbelievable! Most of us think it looks like the project from Hell, but we have lots and lots of new projects. Lots and lots of new people, too. Probably with lots and lots of different hobbies and ideas, too. Hope Devlin didn't promote the area as a great place to molest a child.

From what I have seen reported, Shawn's family pretty much bankrupted themselves from all the money, time and effort they spent trying to find not only Shawn, but every other child that went missing whose family they could help.

Which would have been better? For his mother to remain a widow or for her to get married again?

I think it's a mistake. Because there were no quote marks from the earlier post that you responded to, it might have been misinterpreted by CG. You two seem to be on the same side from where I'm sitting. Hope that helps.

your post is clear as mud as to intent

Of course it is. But, who knows? with some work and expansion it could become Proust.
