I don't fear those who are not Christians, even if they will persecute us. We are called to love and care for the lost, even if we may suffer persecution.
The people I fear are those who pretend they are Christians, while having an agenda to wipe out belief in Jesus and replace it with a self-indulgent secularism with the trappings of Christianity. In this latter category I would put many of the clergy and self-appointed "leaders" of our mainline denominations, as well as phony Christian groups like the National Council of Churches.
I also fear those who falsely teach that following Jesus will bring wealth and prosperity, i.e., the Prosperity Gospel televangelists.
These people are the real wolves among the sheep.
There will come a day when the true Christians will stand head and shoulders above those you describe. It may mean disastrous things happening to America, either by attacks from the enemy or natural disasters like Katrina, etc., but it will happen and then the world will see who's real and who isn't. They will want to know how we can have peace when everything else is falling apart. I believe that time is coming. So, fellow believers, we have to press into God NOW and obey His commands so we will be found worthy during these tumultuous times.
I am not in favor of the prosperity gospel and I have met or heard from more critics of it than I can count. But critics of the equally invalid idea that God expects Christians to be poverty-stricken doormats? I can count those on one hand. It makes me doubt the credibility of those who are only attacking in one direction. Also damaging to their credibility is the fact that they can't seem to see the difference between "God doesn't mind if you have a nice car" and "God wants to give you gabs of cash after you send some to me!"
