Great point!
Ruh-Roh, now you did it.
Nobody's reading this thread anymore, so as a former Redskins fan, I feel OK now putting in an off-topic good word about Joe.
I'm not really much of a sports fan anymore, so I don't really know the broadcasters these days. When the percentage of felons on the roster gets above 15%, I usually lose interest, so baseball's about all I really watch these days, and just the Red Sox.
But I remember Joe Thiesmann, and while he's got faults, I wouldn't call him a faux macho man.
I used to go to (well, drink adult malt beverages at) Joe Thiesmann's Restaurant (bar) in Vienna, VA when I lived there through the '80's. I'd see him in person around the restaurant, and he was a pretty well put together guy, although smallish for a pro football player.
He had the same stat's as me, but his looked like it was all muscle, versus the insulating layers of barley & hops I carried around back then. I only mention it because after seeing the size of pro ball players up close, a guy my size going head-to-head with them is just a bad physics equation (remember, Mass is the "m" in E=mc Squared).
Now LT probably had 3 inches and 60 lbs of muscle over Joe, not to mention whatever rage inducing chemical additives he had in his system on game day. A 60 lbs differential over a 180 lbs guy is a lot. Think about 60 lbs of steak and imagine it slamming into you really really fast. Then imagine it being mean & angry too.
I'm no shrinking violet, played HS football, and was always pretty much insanely fearless on the field, but LT would have scared the bleep out of me. Just standing still.
The point of the whole story is that it was very Real Life Macho for Joe to stand out there like a statue with the big boys like LT barreling down on him like a herd of rabid feral hogs. Taking his lumps, week after week, year after year. Nothing fake about it. Facing an unknown pain isn't half as courageous as facing a known pain and doing it anyway.
That's over and above his considerable skills as a quaterback and leader. I don't have to personally like a man to respect him or his work. He might not be a hero of mine, but I respect what he did.
All that aside, yes, he can be VERY annoying as a broadcaster. Even in his own restaurant, "SHUT UP JOE!" was a frequent refrain when he'd start into one of his monologues on the big screen, (as long as it was a live shot, so he's not standing behind you).
I guess I'm mellowing with age because after all these years, he doesn't annoy me as much as he used to. Unlike many of the people they give a mic to of these days, he speaks standard english very well, is intelligent, and does know a lot about football. It's kind of a left handed compliment, but he's the lesser of two weevils.
Wow, when did I turn into a geezer? Me, defending Joe Theismann? Who'd have thunk it?
Obama is the new Bubba. And, so far, without all those annoying bimbo eruptions that plagued the original Bubba.
First, were sure things will start picking up what with the holidays behind us and the 2008 election looming. For now, the normal Sunday thread is a bit barer than normal thus the pickings are slimmer. I culled ten posters but frankly everyone who took the time to post on this past weeks thread should win a prize.
Second, I will including this post, since I write it in HTML already and wont have to repeat the work, in full on my own Blog. Two or three people a day read my Blog so who knows what kind of traffic well bring in.
Got the idea from Phssssstpok, forgive if Ive misspelled.
Now on to the winnahs!
Two great pics on this weeks thread and coming in at number ten, we have a tie.

The winner this week is a lady. In fact, the top three this week, I THINK, are female.
CM begins by making an unarguable point
Then CM treats us to some Nancy Pelosi insight.
The best of all is CMs post on wives and presidential contenders.
Heh. The above post was so good it even got an on-the-spot, ad hoc award HERE
Nothing like personal experience to enlighten and in this post CM tells us her experience in this countrys mixed up education system.

Many many THANKS! I never dreamed that any remarks that I made would receive such recognition w/so MANY knowledgeable and insightful posters on this thread....a thread that I LOVE! and one that is far better than any TV Sunday show.
Thank you.
Thanks Fishtalk! Great job! Congratulations to the best posts, I thought they were great. Carolinamom is way too modest and usually has great points to offer. In fact, all the top posts were timely and interesting this past Sunday.
Thanks fish, great job and done in recrod time as well.
Another great talented freeper Sunday thread, and great Top Ten choices, especially with the outstanding competition we see every Sunday. We cannot wait for the next excursion into The monitoring of the Talking Fools.
