"The Queen", "Casino Royale" scoop nominations for British awards

LONDON (AFP) - Royal hit film "The Queen" starring Helen Mirren and the new James Bond movie "Casino Royale" grabbed the lion's share of nominations for the top British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards.

"The Queen" tops the list with 10 nods from the BAFTAs, which are seen as key indicators to success at the Oscars in Hollywood, including for best film and for best actress for Mirren's portrayal of the 80-year-old British monarch.

The other best film nominees are "Babel," "The Departed," "The Last King Of Scotland" and "Little Miss Sunshine."

Other nominees for best actress are Dame Judi Dench for "Notes On A Scandal," Kate Winslet for "Little Children," Penelope Cruz for "Volver" and Meryl Streep for "The Devil Wears Prada".

"Casino Royale" scooped nine nominations, including outstanding British film of the year and best actor for Daniel Craig.

It is Craig's first major awards nod as James Bond, another triumph for the English actor who faced early skepticism that he could fill the shoes of his predecessors, particularly Scotsman Sean Connery.

"Casino Royale" has already proved both a critical and box office hit worldwide.

Craig faces competition from Leonardo DiCaprio for "The Departed," Richard Griffiths for "The History Boys," Forest Whitaker for "The Last King Of Scotland" and veteran star Peter O'Toole for "Venus".

Best director goes to either Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for "Babel," Martin Scorsese for "The Departed," Jonathan Dayton/Valerie Faris for "Little Miss Sunshine," Stephen Frears for "The Queen" or Paul Greengrass for "United 93".

At last year's BAFTAs, which were awarded in February, the US movie about gay cowboys "Brokeback Mountain" rounded up four awards, including Best Film.

The BAFTA film awards were moved to a date before the Oscars in 2001 and are now seen as a pointer to who will pick up the iconic golden statuettes in the United States next month.

What I find interesting is that Daniel Craig got nominated for his role as 007...I don't think that he will win the Best Actor Award though.

It would be nice if Craig got picked as one of the Best Actor Nominees for the US Academy Awards...I don't think that will happen.

By the way, "Queen" was very good.

Glad to see Craig and Casino Royale nominated. It wasn't just a great Bond movie, it was a great movie, period.

The DVD of the 1960s spoof version of 'Casino Royale' has as an extra the 1954 episode of Climax! which dramatized it with Barry Nelson playing James Bond. It's a fascinating relic.

I've seen that -- it is indeed a nifty footnote!

What a pretty post. Lol, haven’t seen the ‘little people’ in a long time - they are so cute. Thanks for posting them!
The Bluuuues in the night, lol.
I remember cleaning up around those little guys.

That is the most beautiful car and I’m wondering if that Bahamas license plate was colored to blend well with the car?

Thanks potlatch - a bit of “change” from 0pansy’s non-war military adventures in Libya -

The original Aston Martin DB5 image from Casino Royale had a bit of tinted foggy haze to it to begin with - then I cropped it and enlarged it and did a series of blended composites to put Daniel Craig into the overall image.

The license plate and plate number is the one in a scene from Casino Royale.

I stacked the little animated figures over the lower large image in a <table bgcolor=”black”

I had to readjust the size of small animated figures so they would match up together - The should probably be uploaded in a new separate folder and size-matched so using them will be quicker and easier.

You always put things together in a cute way.

Frankly, it’s good to get away from the news. I haven’t been checking Drudge as much the past few days and it’s nice not to see all the horrible headlines of bad things happening everywhere. Even teens having bikini fights in fast food places!!

I used to frown at those who watch American Idol and Dancing With The Stars, but it’s probably a good break and rests the mind, lol.

Whatcha gonna name a new folder, “Short People”, Minni Me’s, lolol?

Yup -

It’s not like we can do anything about a “Kinetic Military Action” being run from Brazil under the democrat’s Madison Wisconsin Rules: “Run Away Fast!” (or) 0pansy’s “No Fly Zone Needed!”

Especially after we saw the videos of Sen. Joe Biden saying he would impeach GW Bush for his military actions (after fully informing and consulting with Congress and even getting UN resolutions) - and impeachment is only brought up and handled in the US House of Representatives -

LOL! - “Short-People” might be a good name for a new folder

Sometimes I wonder how Biden got to be a Senator. The dummies who elected him.... Wonder what he was before being Senator?

Obama also said in 2007 that a President must go through Congress to go to war.........but they deny this is a war. Just some bomb practice, lol.

Biden was probably an local asst. prosecuting attorney in Delaware -

Then ran for the state legistlature - then leap-frogged to Congress by running for the House of Representatives

From there to Senate

Very likely he illegally used taxpayer money and his public office staff, office, equipment, and telephones to jump in Delaware and in the House - also using unions and union teachers to man the phones during campaigns

That is what Chuckie Schumer did in NYC, NY state, and in the US House

Joe Biden is the corrupt Fairy Queen Mother of all plagiarists

He says and does some of the dumbest things, but he must keep his constituents happy. Maybe if the ‘ear marks’ stop they won’t like him so much.

I always want to call ‘ear marks’ pig ears!! LOL.

Sometimes when I see them in pictures Biden looks like Obama told him to keep his trap shut - probably true too.

Joe Biden brought his son “into the business”

Corruption is causing our downfall and the population has played their part in it. I’ve never stayed well informed on the politics of other states and it sometimes amazes me all the things that happen in some of those itty bitty states!

As industrial unions lost membership

Unions got the teachers - went after nurses - and they fully intend to unionize all hospital staffs and physicians office staffs

At that point doctors will start laying off staff and subbing out tech work and x-rays to nearby offices

Office work will be subbed out to private firms and temporary service firms

Physicians that came up with their own private heathcare financing plans were told by the government that they were illegally setting up their own in-house insurance companies

Most private hospitals set up be physician partnerships then folded and patients were stuck with a local hospital run in the same old way - and tied to Medicare and Medicaid and freevies for illegal aliens and those people who spend their incomes on cars, booze, drugs, homes, big HDTVs, vacations
They know they can get in an ER and soon no hospital will be able to only treat emergency patient cases

America is becoming the Obama welfare nation now

You must have been on a health care thread to get into all of that. There are a number of them tonight but I haven’t been on one.

I think I know more about how 0ponzi is shafting physicians now then the physicians do - they are shocked when they get clued in

Look for 0ponzi and his Fed bunch to start hitting seniors and others on energy and food prices too - he is claiming both have dropped - while they have soared 25% of more recently

Expect no COLA adjustments up for SS seniors in 2012

0ponzi is making more cuts to Seniors and many others to cover his wild endless spending spree(s)
