OAKLAND: A call for unity after racist incident at inauguration
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 1/12/7 | Christopher Heredia

Dellums' swearing-in tainted by crowd mocking De La Fuente -

The racism-tinged disruption of Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums' inauguration on Monday continued to have an impact in Oakland on Thursday as Asian American and Latino community leaders held a news conference to call for racial unity.

But the racial divide to be bridged remained apparent. The news conference had no members of the African American community who had called at the inauguration for City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente, a Latino, to step down.

After those calls were not heeded and De La Fuente was re-elected in a special council meeting at the inauguration, loud jeers -- some racially offensive -- interrupted the ceremony. Dellums had to intervene to call for civility, echoing his administration's commitment to multicultural collaboration.

"What happened is not only unacceptable but shameful and damaging," said Gilda Gonzales, chief executive of the Unity Council, a Fruitvale district nonprofit serving Latino immigrants. "Today, we are making a pledge to get back on track to civility."

Sherry Hirota, head of Asian Health Services and a member of Dellums' executive steering committee, criticized members of the audience who mocked De La Fuente's accent and others who told the councilman of Mexican heritage to "go back where you came from."

"We know wedge politics are not in our self-interest," Hirota said. "Mayor Dellums has taught us the discipline of coalition politics ... to lift all communities."

Somehow I am thinking that the racial taunts and jeers was done by blacks - thus the tip-toeing of the article. If it was done by whites, the article (and title) would be much different...

This is the first shot of a upcoming fight between Hispanics and blacks as the blacks are being displaced in their own neighborhoods in CA and TX. Daily fights are occuring in LA schools where the blacks are outnumbered by Hispanics. Worst the school admin is predominantly Hispanic and once the fights are broken up, it is usually the the black and only black students who are suspended. This furthers the notion that latinos will side with latinos, and the blacks are not going to take this laying down. I think free trade versus populism will divide the GOP, the black versus hispanic will divide the Dems. We live in interesting times.

Sure! None of this would be happening if we didn't steal this land from the Native Americans.

"I think free trade versus populism will divide the GOP"

Populist like Michael Wiener (savage) attack the GOP %70/%30 over the RATs. Also, coming from a populists state like Lousyana, one only has to look at Lousyana's stats to see where populism will get you.

Blacks and Hispanics fighting for the spoils. I'm really surprised that the author was unable to find a way to blame this on white oppression.

I am offended at the use of the term "white". Please use the proper nomenclature of "European-American". Thank-you.

As Latinos and Asians get more and more politically powerfully, we will see more and more vying for major spots on the stage of identity politics. I love the hypocrasy of it all.

When I saw the headline, I immediately I knew that it must not be whites who are guilty here, otherwise the headline would have been very different.

We can call for 'racial unity' all we like- but face it- racism is rampant- only htis time it's the minorities that are racist against the majority- we aint NEVER going to have racial unity- everyone is pissed off at everyone else and the race card is the weapon of choice- This country is building up for an explosion- the tensions are thick.
