I think you are to look at the sunset.....right after the sun goes down....or sunrise right before the sun comes up. I hear that the further south you are the lower on the horizon. You might be too far south.
I couldn't find it here either, but there was some clouds.

After sunset, the brightest light in the sky in the southwest is Venus. The comet should be a bit north (or to the right of Venus) and a bit below Venus. Happy hunting.
