The general said Kurds, who are Sunni but not Arab, were being used against the Shiite Mahdi Army to overcome the predicted refusal by soldiers from other Iraqi units to fight fellow Shiites. An estimated 80 per cent of the Iraqi army is Shiite.

The Kurds should kick Mahdi A$$. They are much better trained, and have a tougher mind set as well. Basically that of "Hill people", even those that live down on the flat in Norther Iraq. Sort of like sending welll equiped and trained Scots against lessor trained and more poorly led French.

I'd like to think Mahliki is being sensible using the Kurds but I wonder if he is only saving himself to become a rich powerful man and the Kurds will be expensed in the end.
