Samuel R. Berger's theft of documents from the National Archives compromised national security "much more than originally disclosed" and resulted in "incomplete and misleading" information being given to the September 11 commission, says the former chairman of the House Government Reform Committee.
"It is now also clear that Mr. Berger was willing to go to extraordinary lengths to compromise national security, apparently for his own convenience," Rep. Thomas M. Davis III, Virginia Republican, said yesterday.
"No one ever told the commission Mr. Berger had access to original documents he could have taken without detection."
In October, Mr. Davis led an effort by House Republicans to investigate and hold hearings on which documents might have been "destroyed, removed or were missing" after visits to the National Archives by Mr. Berger, President Clinton's national security adviser from 1997 to 2001.
Mr. Davis said the investigation found that the full extent of Mr. Berger's document removal can never be known and, consequently, the Justice Department could not assure the September 11 commission -- which was investigating intelligence and security failures -- it received all the documents to which Mr. Berger had access.
"We now know Mr. Berger left stolen highly classified documents at a construction site to avoid detection," he said. "We know Mr. Berger insisted on privacy at times to allow him to conceal documents that he stole."
Mr. Davis noted that during three visits to the Archives, Mr. Berger was given access to working papers of National Security Council staff members, including Mr. Berger, and their content was not inventoried by the Archives at the document level. He said Mr. Berger focused solely on original documents during his first two visits and there was "no way to determine" whether he "swiped any of these..."

Attorney General Gonzalez should be FIRED!!!!
I hope Davis keeps pressing on this. Enough is enough with the catalogue of self dealing in Government.
Dont be too hard on our lil muppet!!! Another busted crony pc hire.
And then who would Bush have a chance of getting confirmed by the dem congress? Janet Reno? LOLOLOLOL
"Attorney General Gonzalez should be FIRED!!!!"
By who? His boss who also new about all of this?
This is bigger than Watergate, Slick authorized The Burglar to cover-up/destroy/replace damning evidence of Slick's indifference to National Security.
It's not Bush's job to investigate crimes, but it IS Gonzalez's.
At one time I handled Top Secret documents. If I did what Berger did I would be in Leavenworth.
"It's not Bush's job to investigate crimes, but it IS Gonzalez's."
Please. Gonzalez works for the President. The president knew about every aspect of this high profile case. No decisions about how to handle the investigation or what to do about Burglar were made without the approval of the President. President Bush could have had a real investigation and prosecution by only saying the word. He didn't want it so we didn't get it.
The most disgusting thing is that the democrats will continue to accuse the Bush administration even though they know Berger stole these documents and they know why.
I've dropped these Berger stories in liberal dominated forums several times and those cowards won't even comment on it. Its like some kind of blaspheme for them to acknowledge it.
I used to give liberals the benefit if a doubt, thinking maybe they're stupid. These days I see most of them as unethical immoral scum who know full well that they're reelecting criminals.
Who can take a paper
Stuff it in a shoe
Cover up the caper
With a perjury or two?
The Sandy Man . . .
The Sandy Man can . . .
The Sandy Man can
'Cause he takes it from the file
To make his boss look good.
Who can take a secret
Tape it to his thigh
Walk it out and sneak it
Like an undercover spy?

The Sandy Man can . . .
The Sandy Man can
'Cause he takes it from the file
To make his boss look good.
The Sandy Man makes
Every move that takes
Classifying as suspicious
And the line of crap he dishes
You can even call fictitious.
Who can take a memo
Slip it up a sleeve
Hold it near his elbow
And say nothing when he leaves?

He got off with a light sentence because of what he told them initially. If they knew then what they're learning now, I doubt that he'd have been shown such leniency.
Double-jeopardy prevents them from punishing Berger again for the theft of the documents, but they can't let his lying to investigators (and resulting slap on the wrist) be allowed to stand.
But it will never happen.

This man Berger should never occupy a position of public trust again.
"Samuel R. Berger's theft of documents from the National Archives compromised national security 'much more than originally disclosed'..."
Not to worry: as we all know, the Clinton administration had neither a position on nor an interest in national security.
"I used to give liberals the benefit if a doubt,"
Never, ever do this again.
Sittin' in an archive room
I see written who did what about whom
Watchin' for Clinton's role
Got to keep my boss's legacy whole
I'm sittin' where the documents lay
Watchin' the guard walk away
I'll just fit 'em in my socks so they'll stay
Placed inside
I'm liftin' just a portion
Just the ones that would give Clinton grief
If I do a few more contortions
It looks like some will even fit in my briefs
I'm sittin' where the documents lay
Watchin' the guard walk away
I'll just fit 'em in my socks so they'll stay
Placed inside
Looks like nothing seems too strange
Everything still appears the same
But I still got these ten papers here left to do
So I hope my suit stands the strain
Sittin' here looking around
And these documents must weigh fifty pounds
These two thousand files I found
Tend to make my socks fall down
I'm sittin' where the documents lay
Watchin' the guard walk away
I'll just fit 'em in my socks so they'll stay
Placed inside
Would they really have cared ?
I seriously doubt it.
If Condaleeza Rice had done this, the Dems would want her in prison for life, if not hung for treason.
