If they were hunting for small game, you could still have functioning hands, even after being shot there. It wouldn't be fun, but you could still possibly defend yourself. It's not like the guys hands were blown off with a shotgun blast or anything. (Stupid gun-ignorant reporting, as usual.)
Also, "stabbed to death" is an interesting phrase. One stab, properly placed, is all it takes. I'm curious to see how many stab woulds there are.
I'm not defending either of them. Seems another one of those situations when two wrong people cross paths. I'd equate it to something like a road rage incident at this point, until more facts come to light.

This guy makes as much sense as OJ. The victim was shot with buck shot AND stabbed six times. The perpetrator demonstrated mens rea by concealing the body, failing to report the death, and attempting to dispose of the weapon.
He has a long criminal history.
