Winds?
Updrafts?
Temperature inversions causing toxic air?
Sudden downdrafts?

They are all omnivores so anything is possible, food-wise.

Some people put poisonous things in bird feeders to kill the squirrels that raid them. I *assume* they know what things are poisonous to squirrels and *aren't* poisonous to birds.

Check out Weather wars
Full time weather manipulation measured by and assisted with the seemingly ever present chemtrail program. This doesnt change from day to day or even season to season.

Did you even read the article?
Ten of thousands of a single species throughout the 90's. No mention of several thousands of various species in a single kill. Since Google makes it so easy, find another example of it. I tried. I can't.
I know, I know... it's nothing. Everything's nothing. And anybody who entertains any other possibility is a tinfoil chewing kook with bad breath and a mother who wears combat boots.

Had 2500 mallards die in southern Idaho of a fungal infection in December.

I don't know what to make of the Austin ones.Since those in Austin were in a few block area, I would assume some business got tired of the poop and sprayed. However, there's always UT's wacko Dr. Pianka (he of the let's kill off 90% of the human race with ebola) or one of his converted students testing an idea for something bigger.

Where have I ruled anything out? I simply noted that it COULD have a natural cause. No conclusions from me, just noting that it might be wise to still consider all possibilities on this, rather than to narrow down right now based on assumptions.

you know if authorities in Austin, TX ever found out what killed all of the birds in downtown Austin yesterday? THAT is pretty freaky too. They opened the streets at noon after issuing the statement they are testing birds but haven't a clue as to why. For a while they were saying it was the weather. Sure, there was a feakish drop in temperature in the six block area and no where else.
