WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A U.S. submarine has collided with a Japanese merchant vessel, a senior U.S. Navy official told CNN.
The USS Newport News was surfacing in the Arabian Sea south of the Straits of Hormuz when it hit the Japanese ship, the official said.
There were no injuries, he said, but there was some damage.
"Neither ship is in extremis," the official said late Monday local time in Washington D.C., meaning the damage was not serious enough to put the ships in jeopardy.
The incident recalled a previous collision between a U.S. submarine and a Japanese ship.

While the article doesn't say what kind of Japanese ship, my bet is it was a tanker. And as an ex-sonar tech, I can attest that these ships are very quiet, the oil in the cargo holds dampens the ships ambient noise very well.

"Neither ship is in extremis,"I would say that one or both captains are in deep extremis.

It has happened more times than you know. It's not a perfect world out there. It's dangerous. The only reason it doesn't get reported on more has to do with politics of the news organizations. When you consider how many Subs are out there doing ops. (surfacing or coming to PD everyday), it's amazing that it doesn't happen every month.

I can't figure how how this happens. This is not the first time. Probably not the second or third.
It's a big ocean. How do you run into a merchant ship?
I rode surface ships for years and never came close to hitting another ship. How could a US Navy sub commander (best of the best) hit a freakin' merchant ship.
He deserves to lose his boat.

I think the most significant point here is we have subs in the Persian Gulf. We just sent a 2nd carrier group there this week.
Maybe sumpin cumin to a head?

PS. Neither ship was damaged so it looks like an intentional leak, to me anyway.
Maybe that bastard is about to come out of his well in Iran.

So, does a sub surface without a periscope sweep? They rely on passive detection alone before surfacing?
That's hard to believe or just not wise.

How could a US Navy sub commander (best of the best) hit a freakin' merchant ship. I said the same thing when the bonehead drove one into an underwater mountain, and when the other captain got those two men killed in england last week. The Navy needs to stand down for some serious ass chewing.
