DURHAM -- The angry punch to his face didn't have a lasting effect on Eliseo Hernandez.
The lumps caused by fierce kicks to his body have long since disappeared.
But the terror of having three guns thrust against his body as he was beaten, threatened with death and robbed on Thanksgiving Day spawned lingering emotional trauma.
Hernandez's tale of terror is anything but unique in Durham. For a variety of reasons, many say, Hispanics are a lucrative, vulnerable and growing target for armed robbers.
The Hispanics also say most of the robbers are black. Of 17 Hispanics asked, all said they were either a robbery victim or knew one -- and that the assailants in every case were black.
An assistant Durham County district attorney supports their assertion, saying armed robbery of Hispanics here is chiefly a black-on-Hispanic crime.
Sleepless nights and a gnawing fear of again facing death at the point of a gun barrel are the mental barbs hooked into Hernandez's psyche, he said.
Retelling his experience is obviously painful -- his head hung low, mostly avoiding eye contact, his voice is an odd mixture of anger and shame.
But the immigrant from Guanajuato, Mexico, believes his life-threatening experience is little more than a statistic to police.
And in Durham, such statistics illustrate grave vulnerability -- nearly half of all robbery victims are Hispanic, although Hispanics represent only about 9 percent of the city's population, according to the 2000 census.
Robberies increased 58 percent during the first nine months of 2006 when compared with the same period in 2005, according to Deputy Police Chief Ron Hodge. Most involved stick-ups, and most of the victims were Hispanic, he said.
In July, August and September 2006, the most recent period for which statistics are available, 46 percent of all Durham robbery victims were Hispanic, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael has said.
"It's probably more like 90 percent," Hernandez said. (snip)
He and a Hispanic friend who also was beaten and robbed that night did call the police, but Hernandez said that was futile.
"Police don't do anything," he said.
Instead of posting more patrols in high-crime neighborhoods, police told him it was his fault for carrying so much money, and advised him to look out his windows to be vigilant of suspicious activity, he said.
"the assailants in every case were black"
The headline should be "blacks rob Hispanics".
But no. PC forbids telling the truth when it reveals that blacks commit much more crime for their numbers than any other portion of society.
A relative LEO told me the most lucrative targets for robberies in NC are the "exchange houses" where both legal and illegals take money to be wired back to their home countries. Because many are illegal, reports are sketchy, because they are less than secure, they are easy targets, and because many send major portions of their incomes "home", the targets are RICH.
But maybe I missed them.
This is all such a mystery. If only the reporter, or somebody, could come up with a clue as to why this is happening to numerous bewildered workers from places like Guanajuato!
I remember a time when one could go just about anywhere in SF, and have a wonderful time. Then, during early to mid-80s, an ugly change came about. SF began offering the most generous welfare benefits of any city in the United States. And they came. Came from all over the United States.
When citizens became so verbally outraged by the overall accosting they were getting from the homeless and those just sticking us all up, pretending -- Cecil Williams, Glide Memorial, entered the political stage.
In the years to follow, it was discovered that "yes" San Francisco had been working to clean-up the streets. One of the methods of doing this was through providing ONE WAY BART tickets (paid for by the taxpayer) for the "homeless" to the counties surrounding San Francisco. Crime in locations surrounding the BART Train stops began experiencing big crime. And why not? Take a stop, rip off a house, get back on the train....
And of course, BART now has to have regular security on board the trains: it can often get violent, especially at stops around Oakland. And if it weren't for the presence of Cabbies at end of the line in Daley City, I'd include Daley City in the category of.... "this recent unpleasantness".
I LOVED San Francisco, once upon a time. Lived it, breathed it, loved it.
Seen one liberal shell game on the order and scope of this one; you've seen the blueprint of "economic development plans" by Democrats for all cities.
Additionally, the Al Gore "phone tax" was added to our bills.
Not only did they come from all over the United States, they came from all OVER the world, packing the courts with "legal amnesty" complaints, overstaying VISA's, like one would use toilet paper. San Francisco became a "Sanctuary" model.
Yes, and another scheme is to sell fake IDs or worse: take their money for false ID and skip out on them.
The funniest story, though, is the one about the illegal who received his first paycheck after using a stolen ID. Some 40% of his earnings had been "attached" for back child support. It seems the SS # of the ID theft victim had not been paying his child support, and now the illegal guy was paying it! :-)
They're only being the victims of violent crimes of which natural-born Americans are unwilling to be victimized. [/sarasm]
Seriously though, the illegal immigrants (and I'm willing to bet a stack of $20's they are...) living in Durham are ripe to become further victims of crime because they are already part of the criminal subculture. This is why violent crime is comparatively shocking in nicer communities...because criminals also have a tendency to prey upon others who are living in their midst.

LOL! well, for once, that particular crime paid off...
The relative LEO also included those ID rings as potentially lucrative targets because they deal in cash, can't easily report robberies, and usually have several thousand $'s on hand.
My advice has always been that if one deals with a crook, it should come as no surprise when they are crooked themself.
Check out what's happening in California, especially the L.A. area. It won't be long before these Hispanics exact their revenge. Hell, it's even happening already in Houston. Formerly Black Ghettoes are now Hispanic Barrios with the Blacks having been forced out in fear of their lives.
Much like the Whites were previously forced out of the Inner City.
and who destroyed the pay phones?
Probably the homeless.
I visited SF in Sept. and was disgusted by the aggressive panhandling and public urination. One homeless guy had a laminated bus pass on a lanyard around his neck. Guess that was courtesy of the city of SF as well. Didn't see those on other homeless folks. I guess they sold theirs.
If it's known by the robbers that this type of victim has a habit of carrying or dealing primarily in cash, where large amounts of it can be easily found, what to they expect? It's an easy take; you don't have to bother with the black market when you can get cash, and it's a pretty sure bet to hit the jackpot.
Yep, read some of those articles here on FR.
The dirty little un-pc secret is that 'Hispanics' and blacks hate each other. Talk about pure racism and that's it.
Here in Chicago the blacks and Hispanics have pretty much avoided each other. Back when neighborhoods 'changed' blacks would go to one, Hispanics to another. The trouble would usually start when they'd be in a City Park which bordered both (like Marquette Park). And so far there hasn't been a lot of black gang against Hispanic gang stuff (Except maybe like in Cook County Jail).
My old neighborhood is now 98% Mexican and it changed fast. Maybe five years and wham - gone are the pizza and hamburger joints, hello taco stands. But it's still pretty safe during the day (for now at least). The gang presence isn't that large - or rather 'open'.
Back in the 60's when there was all the civil unrest and strained race relations, a black man who worked with my father told him that if there was ever a race war in this country, that it wouldn't be black against white, but black against black. Of course, that never happened, but now I''m beginning to wonder about the black vs. Hispanic. Everything I've read indicates a great deal of tension and animosity between those two groups. I'm glad I live far from a big city.
Such reports are sometimes precursors to local or national banks and the Mexican government offering to step in and help. That takes the form of that government giving IDs which the banks use to open accounts.
Here's one example:

They also typically work for cash and don't have bank accounts or secure personal living space so they tend to carry large amounts of cash on their persons.
Is this reminiscint of Florida when tourist were robbed back in the last century. The robbers didn't expect the tourist to return for trials if they got caught.
I bet these robbers are thinking they are robbing illegal immigrants who won't call the cops.
Its too simple to say,"blacks and Hispanics hate each other"
There is high tension and drama in some places,no doubt about it.Yet I sub in the Bay Area schools and relationships are fairly cordial in most places.
The funny thing around here is the emulation of black speech, music and fashion by Latino and Asian kids.
Must drive the parents crazy!
I like keeping things "simple" and calling a spade a spade and cutting to the chase. Black and white, no gray, no 'nuance', no 'yes buts'.
And when you get right down to it they just don't like each other. Whites are more tolerant of either group. A black or 'Hispanic' moves into a white area - no problem. Any other scenario results in trouble for the 'minority' by the 'majority'.
