I see... high RPM... supercharger... literally squeezing everything possible out of 3 liters for a brief run or race...
bleeding edge tech for that time.

The subject of that book, IBM and the Holocaust, definitely falls under the "truth-stranger-than-fiction/you-just-can't-make-up-stuff-like-this" category!

I never knew that the number on the victims arms was from the IBM census.
This whole book is chilling.

Each car had a rear, three-litre engine providing 485 brake horse powerThe story seems to suggest that Auto Union and Mercedes Benz both built rear engine racecars. Only the Auto Union was a rear engine. Mercedes used a conventional front engine layout, but angled the engine in the chassis to permit the driveshaft to lie alongside the driver's seat, achieving a lowslung configuration for improved cornering.
Mercedes engines were V-12s. Auto Union used both V-12 and V-16 setups in different seasons; I don't recall the exact history, but I think at one time at least one of the cars with a V-12 was rolled out with 4 fake exhaust stacks to impress or confound the boys from Stuttgart.

At the end of the war the Auto Union team's cars, which are believed to have been hidden in a mineshaft in Germany, were found by the Russians who took them back to the Soviet Union so that engineers could study their technology. So they did. And all they could come up with based that study was the Lada?
