Just a quick reality check here. How many threads have I seen where we rant and rave against people from this part of the world coming here and trying to impose their values on us? I agree, it is completely wrong for third-worlders to emigrate to the US and then try to turn our country into the same kind of hellhole they came from.
OTOH, this is their country, their customs, and their way of doing things. Now I don't think it is right, but I have to recognize the reality of the situation. We haven't even imigrated to their country, and yet we sit here and smugly tell them what they are doing is wrong & sinful.
Why don't we conduct a poll among these young girls? Ask them whether they would rather be "sexually exploited" or dead?
Their culture has been doing this for at least 1400 years, and I bet old Mo wasn't the one who invented it. If he was, he would never have sold his "religion" to the people there. It was a well established custom there.
In midieval Europe (not that all fired long ago in the grand scheme of things) Christians eventually forbad betrothal before the age of seven, and forbad betrothals lasting more than 4 years, which tells me that a lot of Christian girls were married before the age of 11. And, there was no freedom of choice. Betrothals and marriages were arranged by families.
The concept of waiting many years after puberty to marry is a very recent invention, and Christians betrothed and wed many a young girl.
