Looking for Mr. Right(Dick Cheney maybe...)
Time ^ | Jan. 4, 2007 | KAREN TUMULTY

It wasn't so long ago that conservatives believed that George Bush's presidency would usher in a political realignment that would last for decades. But as the right looks forward to the next election, something close to panic is setting in. Surveying the leading G.O.P. contenders for 2008, direct-mail guru Richard Viguerie pronounces "not a one of them is worthy of support from conservatives." Says Craig Shirley, a public relations executive who represents many conservative groups and who has written a book on the Reagan revolution: "There's anger, there's angst, there's dismay in the conservative movement." Some activists, Shirley adds, have even begun talking quietly among themselves about forming a third party.

All that worry might seem premature, given that the Iowa caucuses are still a year away. But the race for the Republican nomination is already taking a shape that alarms many conservatives, especially the Evangelicals who were so crucial to Bush's re-election in 2004. None of the top three potential Republican candidates considering a bid to succeed Bush has a record that makes the right entirely comfortable. Senator John McCain originally opposed Bush's tax cuts, supports looser immigration policies, voted against a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and was an architect of the deal under which Senate Democrats retained their right to filibuster Bush's judicial nominees. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is in favor of gun control, abortion rights and same-sex civil unions. And outgoing Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney espoused liberal views on gay rights and abortion when he was running for office in Massachusetts, though he has disavowed them as he has moved into national politics. Many conservatives had high hopes for Virginia's George Allen and Pennsylvania's Rick Santorum--until they lost their Senate re-election races last year.

Has Mr. Keyes ever won a popular election for public office?

If there was a straight up election between Keyes and Bloomberg, who would you vote for?

Giuliani vs. Keyes?

Schwarzeneggar?

Hillary?

(Not really expecting a straight answer...but one can always try...)

You've taken to attacking me personally at every opportunity in recent months. However, in this case I overreacted to your usual attack on Keyes. I took it personally when I shouldn't have. So, I've asked the Moderator to remove my "Barrabas" post, and I apologize.

I'm sorry that I'm not a favored son around here, or I could get away with a question. Of course, any such question would not be as severe as an accusation that I would have voted for Barabbas over Christ.

THAT would be really out of line.

Quite a claim. Pity you can't substantiate it.

Were it not so, we would be like animals with no sense of justice

So, you assume all "animals" have no sense of justice, no sadness over the unfortunate plight or predicament of one of its own?

Very "human" of you.

Humans haven't a clue. (jmo)

The funny thing of the skeptics about Duncan Hunter is that you will not find a more solid man with conservative principles and military experience, a straightforward no nonsense guy who gets the message out extremely well and would make a great candidate. The cries seem to be "who?" or "he's only a Rep". He is the best candidate period. And I think he would be an awesome campaigner so we'll just have to see. It's not going to go well with the Rudy McRomneys.

Why waste Hunter on California? Why was Santorum wasted in PA? Why should Michael Steele be wasted in Maryland? Some of these states are hopeless. The point is that Hunter has plenty of gov't experience along with his military expertise and why not at this time when we have no direction in the party and the pathetic lack of response in fighting back. Hunter is well spoken and vocal and has made military matters a large part of his expertise serving in the House. We need strong leadership especially at this time. I think he's the best that could run honestly.

Excellent response. Now is the time to have a quality candidate like Hunter. He should not be wasted on California's extremism. He has plenty of experience and is the man to get behind.

Oh and Hillary choosing a state due to its leftist loving voting record to run for Senate makes her more worthy of running for POTUS?! When was the last time a woman became CIC? What about Giuliani? He is only a mayor. And what is the talk with Obama who hasn't even served his entire Senate term? That's all you've got against Hunter, fine. But he's the best in the race and you haven't really challenged that.

Cheney:

"If drafted I will not run. If elected I will not serve. I can't make it any more plain."

Every time an interviewer asks Cheney about running or being drafted to run, Cheney gets madder and madder. He's cool, but I can see him doing an increasing slow burn in the cool Cheney way. He is sick of being asked this. I DON'T BLAME HIM.

It was settled a long time ago.

Because some people LIKE YOU focus more on the snooty comment he's a CONGRESSMAN rather than substance! And you don't even want to give him a chance on that but the names being put out there aren't conservative in principles and aren't as effective as Hunter. He is one of the most vocal Republicans who has taken on the media and Demonrats. How many Republicans do that?
