Good wquestion, and you have hit the mark. Michigan is 18 WITHIN the state, but 21 if you go OUTSIDE the state.
If the driver came from Michigan and is, indeed, 20, he is in violation of the law.

I just caught an interview on CNN with one of the people initially buried in the avalanche.. his car went over the edge and turned over several times.
His wife's seatbelt was lodged and he had to dig himself out (under the snow) and find a knife and then back into the car to pull his friend out of the backseat, of his two-seat car, and then the two of them worked to free his wife. He said they all had backcountry, avalanche, training, but nothing prepared them for this. Now, why hasn't FOX interviewed any of these people?

Well, if the driver's only 20, he'd better not have been driving interstate...

At 20, he cannot drive interstate. I would think from MI to Miami involved leaving the state.

I believe the Federal requirement is 21 years...you can get a CDL for intrastate driving at 18.

I wouldn't bet on a cover-up by the Feds. They want to be the big hero (and that's OK) and would love a chance to trumpet a big find on live TV. There's no point in covering up stuff like thisSure there is. Commerce.
Not saying that's what hapened here, but to discount the possibility of a story being concocted for public consumption isn't realistic. Half the shows on the History Channel revolve around the true story behind the headlines.

The feds cover stuff up all the time in order to follow 'trails'...sometimes they cover stuff up to hide their own incompetence as well. I can appreciate your faith in them, but I don't share it with as much confidence as you do. Sorry.

He's in violation of several laws. He's probably unauthorized to carry passengers, too.
These animals travel in packs of five. Where are the other two?
Aboard a cruise ship??
