Pelosi hints at denying Bush Iraq funds

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said newly empowered Democrats will not give President Bush a blank check to wage war in Iraq, hinting they could deny funding if he seeks additional troops.

"If the president chooses to escalate the war, in his budget request, we want to see a distinction between what is there to support the troops who are there now," she said in an interview broadcast Sunday.

"The American people and the Congress support those troops. We will not abandon them. But if the president wants to add to this mission, he is going to have to justify it and this is new for him because up until now the Republican Congress has given him a blank check with no oversight, no standards, no conditions," said Pelosi, D-Calif.

Her comments on CBS' "Face the Nation" came as Bush worked to finish his new war plan that could send as many as 20,000 additional U.S. troops to Iraq and provide more money for jobs and reconstruction programs.

Bush is expected to announce his plan as early as Wednesday.

When asked about the possibility of cutting off funds, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer declined to say whether Democrats might do so, saying only that the current strategy clearly is "not working."

"I don't want to anticipate that," said Hoyer, D-Md., on "Fox News Sunday."

Some military officials, familiar with the discussions, say Bush at first could send 8,000 to 10,000 new troops to Baghdad, and possibly Anbar Province, and leave himself the option of adding more later if security does not improve.

"Based on the advice of current and former military leaders, we believe this tactic would be a serious mistake," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.,

The fact that the Speaker and Majority leader have publicly raised the possibility of defunding the war will massively boost the insurgents' morale. The result: more attacks and more dead American soliders, not to mention Iraqi civilians.

From the insurgents' perspective, victory is now at hand.

IMO.

So Rummy resigned, Generals leading the way are replaced, Intelligence people are relaced, there is a new UN ambassador. There are new plans for Iraq.

Now this strategy doesn't work and it wasn't even implemented yet.

Dems mantra, "Don't blame me, I voted for Stalin."

They are merely positioning themselves for the 08 election campaign...at the cost of some American military lives.

The mere threat to obstruct the prosecution of the Iraqi War gives our enemies the will to carry on.

Finally, proof that "we support the troops" has always been a lie. They have always hated the military and they always will.

The COWARDLY Democrat Leaders are a fixin to turn this into a sure enough loss for the USA.

Putting our soldiers in harms way and then pulling the rug out from under them just to flex their newly acquired power.

In My Opinion, the current crop of Democrats are not good patriotic Americans when it comes to Americas military.

"Pelosi hints at denying Bush Iraq funds"

Stupid b!tch, she's not hurting President Bush, she is huring the soldiers & Marines in the field. Not that she'd care either way.

Sadly, not true. Bush will cave to the extortion

No .. he will try his best to out maneuver them .. the question is .. can is do it successfully with a DBM hell bent on losing this war

The battle field is not just over in the middle east .. it's also here at home

Maybe the US Military should "re-deploy" to D.C. and give the capitol back to the people.

re: 35-50 B-52's, isn't it??

And on the other side of the coin, it's amazing how the attitude of the enemy changes when a ranking member of Congress goes on record as advocating pulling the funding for our efforts! We are not going to prevail in this conflict as long as we have two enemies, the one in Iraq AND the ones in Congress and the MSM.

The GOP hasn't been ruined by RINOS, the party needs to have a broad spectrum of beliefs to survive with a 2 major party system.

So, just caving in to the liberals is your idea of winning?

There is no "broad spectrum of beliefs" in rolling over for the other side.

So how do we tell them NOW!

We start by writing letters (not emails, actual letters) - letters to Pelosi, Reid, Schumer, Rangel; the Dem leadership and let them know that they are not going to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory . . . . . not again. The Dems did this in 'Nam, they won't do it again.

The Dems will ignore the letters - especially if they come from conservatives - so we must follow up with action to disrupt their campaign stops by making it clear that their defeatist policies are killing our troops. IOW, we must start acting like liberals, that's the only way we will get their attention.

You beat me to it! God help us if the Democrats get this past the President. However, I think Bush is strong enough to not let this happen.

re: God help us all if she gets her way

I fear the damage is already done. The enemy is not dumb and certainly has shown a willingness to wait us out. Can you imagine the aid and comfort it gives them when the Speaker of the House of Representative announces a full court press to abandon our efforts! Talk about an invitation to up the ante and by so doing make us more anxious to get out.

It is all very frustrating.

And millions will be slaughtered.

There is no reason to believe that wouldn't be the case -- the only question is who would be slaughtered by whom, and how long it could continue before the entire region hemmorrages to the point that talk of returning begins.

In Mona Charen's excellent book Useful Idiots she outlined how New York Times writer Sidney Schanberg rose to international fame as the reporter who told the world about Pol Pot's "Killing Fields." Sam Waterston of Law & Order played Schanberg in a movie that won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor (the late Dr. Haing S. Ngor). What most of the world has forgotten is that when the U.S. was still in Southeast Asia, Schanberg was foursquare for the pullout, quoted as saying "[N]othing could be worse for the Cambodian people than the American presence."

(Ann's got the looks and the publicity, but Mona's got the writing skills, and NO, I'm not apologizing for saying that.)

She is signaling to the enemy in Iraq, "take on the US President, don't give up, we are behind you".

Obviously this will not be "reported" this way, so American's will never know what she is doing.

Pelosi hints at denying Bush Iraq funds

Hints? They're a little outdated. I saw the skank say that exact thing on Friday!
