On the subject of public opinion that is just the problem Iraq faces. I know the ordinary pundit of the left seldom reads anything but the NYT and the Washington Post but he or she may profit from reading Jose Ortega y Gasset's The Revolt of the Masses. On page 127 of the paperback edition Ortega y Gasset in 1930 nailed the problem in Iraq which is:
"...What happens is at the times public opinion is nonexistent. A society divided into discordant groups, with the forces of public opinion canceling one another out, leaves no room for a ruling power to be constituted. And as "nature abhors a vacuum" the empty space left by the absence of public opinion is filled by brute force...
"...forthright, commonplace; there can be no rule in opposition to public opinion."
I do hope West Point still has Machiavelli on their reading list and can only hope they might add Jose Ortega y Gasset.
In Baghdad we must restore order, overcome the brute force being used by all parties and find a common public opinion sufficient to permit orderly rule. Leaving things to drift will ennoble savagery and pillage as an alternative to civilized living.

Biden is talking in circles. In July 2006, the date of Bush's press conference just shown on MTP, Biden was condemning the President for "staying the course and not having enough troops." Today, the President essentially is "changing the course, adding troops" and Biden is still condemning him. The man is a born liar and living proof that Democrats stand for nothing except being Anti-Bush. If Bush tried to appoint Hillary Clinton to the USSC, they'd vote her down. |

fishtalk, you dog may be emitting some vibes...I don't fully understand dog talk.
Our old lab seemed to attract dogs. He was always on leash and the other dogs he attracted were not. He didn't seek out dogs and dogs on leash were easily avoided.
Once a dog came up to him (after I shouted warnings to an owner if one was nearby) they would go the nose to nose thing, Stewart would be wagging his tale vigorously ... not necessarily a sign of good feelings, I learned ... and then he would attack.
Nothing bad ever happened because he was leashed and the other dog could run away.
He was otherwise gentle and loved people.

The US is big and powerful and if we defend ourselves, we are the bully.
aside to Miss Marple: we are now talking about dogs instead of the Sunday shows, is that better?
I would also point out that we are close to having a similar, though so far non-violent, situation in this country.
Between the constantly changing and dangerous posturing of the democrats (not to mention their lies), the angry rhetoric from the left and the far right, and the media's total lack of responsibility in coverage of the war and the news in general, American public opinion is fractured, confused, and (in many cases) simply withdrawing from the discussion (witness me and my sudden interest in cooking shows).
I don't know how to wrest control of the podium from the left, but we have to figure out a way to frame the discussion so that we aren't always either on the defensive or shouting in anger.

I hear you. I'm already whipped because of the Cowboy game last nite, so I'm protecting my mental health right now.
I think I will finish taking down that Christmas tree I mentioned earlier.

I am worried about my niece. She bought a new house before she sold her old one.
She is now renting to her former next-door neighbor who has not been able to come up with enough rent to make the house payment, even though my niece is still paying utilities.
I've warned her that it may be hard to get this woman out ... I don't know how hard, but I'm thinking a couple of months anyway.
She's also been warned that if she stops paying utilities, she will be liable in some way because there are children in the house.
She needs a lawyer (a cheap one)
My deepest sympthathy to her mom.
I saw her show once and immediately changed because she was hosting the Carters.
Decaf is as useful as non-alcoholic beer.
The DP drinks it because of high blood pressure, so I make decaf and add a big teaspoon of instant regular coffee to my cup.
It's awful, of course, but at least I get some caffeine.

My prediction is that they will be worse than a gym full of inner-city teenagers at a lecture on abstinence. You will see some of the nastiest behavior possible by so-called adults.
We are tuning out because the Sunday shows have become a joke.
There is no there, there.
No substance, no new voices, no new ideas.
But I hope they keep having them because this is one of my favorite threads on Free Republic. For some reason, all the irrational, nasty people don't seem to come here.
Tell her to keep paying the utilities.
Send a pay or quit notice immediately to the tenant, and have the eviction papers filled out and ready to deliver after the 9 days are up. 30 days to go to court, 3 days for the Sheriff to put the tenant on the curb.
Simple.
NO PHONE CALLS. NO TALKING TO THE TENANT. EVERYTHING IN WRITING, BUT NO VOICE CONTACT WHATSOEVER.
If you want, a lawyer will do it all for you. The most important thing, is to accept or return NO calls or messages from the tenant. He-said-she-said squabbles can slow everything down.
