I know whereof I speak. I was raised in a family whose women wore REAL stones and I was taught how to tell fakes from the real stuff, at a rather early age. My alexandrite ring, which I bought in Bermuda was real; it was appraised. I really never cared much for it and gave it to my dear friend, who is still a very dear friend, to this day.

I don't know what they sell for today ( which is patently obvious by my previous posts ), but I certainly DO know what they were going for several decades ago, in Bermuda.

Garnets look NOTHING at all like alexandrites. Garnet was my great grandmothetr's birthstone and I grew up being allowed to wear them, when I played dress-up. Garnets and alexandrites are semiprecious stones, but garnets do NOT change color.

If you want to discuss this further, I suggest that we do it in private, since the topic of this thread is diamonds. :-)

I'm really curious to learn more about that stone. How big was it (approximate weight in carats?) Do you recall the shape: oval, rectangular, other? What were its colors under daylight and tungsten light? What sort of jeweler in Bermuda sourced it?

I went to my favorite site, and searched for alexandrite jewelry. No luck. Perhaps they are getting as rare as hens teeth?

You ladies seem to know your jewelry, so let me ask you about the onslaught of 10K gold. I've even seen jewelry made from 5K! My mom told me years ago, that 18K was ideal, 24K was too soft, and 14K was acceptable. I avoid 10K like the plague, unless it's "mixed media". Same with sterling silver and cubic zirconia. Sure it looks pretty, but the resale value isn't worth my time. So, apart from giving 10K gold to a young girl, does it have a durable resale value?

I personally don't need anymore jewelry, but I'm looking towards the future. Yeah, I've got a full length ranch mink that belonged to my mom. I want to have it cleaned and reconditioned. Good luck finding a furrier in this neck of the woods...

Well, I'm off to bed. Thanks for any input you may have :)
