Does the opal have to be kept polished? I seem to remember that Opal's can dry out and crack?

I've only had it a little over a year, and have never polished it . . . I guess I should look into that! I don't recall my mother ever caring for her opals.

Maybe that's 'cause we live in Houston, and it's pretty darn humid here. :)
