From the article at top of thread:

Major Paul Aguirre, a spokesman for the Arizona National Guard, said troops are armed and will defend themselves if their lives are in danger, but their role is to provide support for the Border Patrol.

Does anyone have first-hand info that is different from this?

Both Rush Limbaugh and Neal Boortz said, back when the troops were initially deployed, that they were not armed. Perhaps that changed to being armed but not supposed to use them unless their lives were in danger. In either case, the thought of our troops running from a bunch of illegal aliens and/or drug runners is pathetic.
