Gov. Jon Corzine yesterday announced the state will provide $10 million in state funds for scientific research on embryonic stem cells, and said he will sign a bill tomorrow that provides $270 million for a stem cell institute. The governor also said he plans to sign legislation to legalize civil unions for same-sex couples Thursday, and today will sign a measure to create a pilot needle exchange program to prevent the spread of AIDS among drug addicts.
"We have been far too long in getting to conclusions on these, particularly on (stem cells and needle exchange)," he said. The three controversial bills are among more than 50 the Legislature sent to the governor's desk last week, before taking a three-week holiday recess. Corzine has 45 days to act after a bill is sent to him.
With Democrats taking control of Congress and President Bush leaving the White House in 2008, Corzine said, it's inevitable that federal restrictions on stem cell research will be eased and New Jersey will be in a good position. The $10 million in grants will be specifically targeted for research on embryonic stem cells, which has been the hardest hit by the federal restrictions in place the past several years, Corzine said.
"We want to jump-start this and do everything we can to ensure New Jersey is at the forefront of this research," he told reporters at the Statehouse. Assemblyman Neil Cohen (D-Union), a sponsor of the stem cell bill, commended Corzine for including the money in the current budget.
But Marie Tasy of New Jersey Right to Life criticized Corzine for using taxpayer funds to finance "ineffective embryonic stem cell research when adult stem cells already treat 65 medical conditions safely and effectively and embryonic stem cells treat none."

Corzine of course waited until Bob Menendez was reelected to implement this stuff. What a weasel.
There's a combination a politician can be proud of.
I wish I hadn't read this. Maybe the world will end soon.
Ah... The key issues of our time: stem cells, needle swaps, and civil unions. I'm glad SOMEONE is looking out after what's important to me...
That other stuff about the gays is just window dressing to distract you from the darker elements of his soul.
NOT
You know, it really MUST be important to somebody if the citizens of so many states keep voting for politicians who promote it religiously.
A state unable to reject a degenerate (and that applies to the U.S. and B.J.Clinton) is ripe for deeper evil to seep through as something the moderate voters cannot reject because of 'judging'.
If I lived in NJ I don't know what I'd do.
Later pingout. Sickening.
I get NJ's former sleezy RAT senators mixed up. Which one is the crook? Which one is a senile benchwarmer? and which one is the out of touch billionaire who wants everyone else to live by rules he shuns?
Thank for helping me with the score card. I do think I have the RAT GAY illegal-job-payola former GOV. down OK.
Holy cow bump.
ok
Coleus - I’ll be good! Don’t scare me any more. I realize how bad I’ve been...
