January 4, 2007 -- A day after leaping onto the tracks to rescue a fallen stranger from an oncoming train, Subway Superman Wesley Autrey was the toast of the town, getting applause from New Yorkers, awed letters from schoolkids and a giant bite of Big Apple fame and fortune.

The Navy vet added, "I didn't think I did anything heroic. The real heroes are fighting overseas."
This man is a hero.
I sure hope it was his wife who named the kids.
* Donald Trump will reward the construction worker with a check for $10,000.
* The David Letterman show booked the Harlem dad of three for an appearance tonight.
* The director of the New York Film Academy, where Hollopeter is a student, gave Autrey a $5,000 check and scholarships for his daughters, Shuqui, 6, and Syshe, 4, for a 12-week film and acting program.
* Other offers included college tuition for the kids - who were on the subway platform Tuesday.
* Autrey and his kids were offered a trip to Disney World.
"What I did I did out of the kindness, not for the glory or the money," Autrey said.
But his courage won the city's heart.
He deserves all those things and more He's a true humble hero!
Great! This guy deserves all the accolades. His Navy training came to the fore with courage and quick thinking.
God bless him and his family.
Wesley Autrey stands with his two daughters Syshe, 4, left, and Shuqui, 6, at the Broadway & 145th Street subway stop in New York shortly after he saved the life of a teenager who fell onto tracks in front of an oncoming train Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007. At first, he tried to pull the young man up, but he was afraid he wouldn't make it in time and they would both be killed. "So I just chose to dive on top of him and pin him down," he said. Autrey and the teen landed in the drainage trough between the rails Tuesday as a southbound No. 1 train entered the 137th Street/City College station, where Autrey was waiting with his daughters. Wow Trump....must have had to hock a pair of socks or a bottle of champagne to afford such and extravagant gift.
i am familiar with that station. the drainage dip in the middle of the tracks? YUCK! have fun getting that smell off you. good job swabbie.
Good for him. It's about time we see someone rewarded for real heroism.
He could run for Mayor!
well, you are remembering the football player, not really honoring him. the football player didnt perform a heroic act. is the media referencing him as a gang member?
God was looking out for him. That trough isn't always deep enough to hold two people.
I thought the "saved" kid's father's statement of gratitude was moving. Fathers everywhere could only imagine how they would feel if somebody single-handedly saved their child's life.
Regardless, it's not the amount, it's the offering.
Not to defend the attention wh*re, but Trump didn't have to offer anything - and he offered what would be a substantial gift for the normal day to day person. I'd take the $10,000, gift my 10% to the church and thank Trump, (and God) every second for the genorosity.
Just a great story. Period.
I'll make it a point to record tonight's show.
