Homes Sought For Pit Bulls Believed Involved In Dog Fighting

MUNCIE, Ind. -- An animal shelter in Muncie has been overrun by rescued pit bulls who were likely being groomed for a fight to the death.

A battered dog was found dead in a Dumpster on Wednesday, highlighting a problem that has become more pervasive in Delaware County, 6News' Ericka Flye reported.

Dozens of pit bulls officials said might have been used for fighting were recently seized from a home and put up for adoption. About half of them have already been adopted, but 13 remained on Wednesday evening.

"They were being bred to be sold as either breeding dogs or to be raised at some point to fight themselves," said Bob Patterson, an animal investigator.

Patterson helped rescue more than two-dozen pit bulls from a home when police raided it in a drug sting.

"Basically, there were makeshift homemade kennels that hadn't been cleaned recently. There was a lot of feces laying around," Patterson said. "Out of the kennels, there were two that may have had food in it. Some didn't have water."

Two more pit bulls were found Wednesday on the streets. They had been chained together and were bloody and battered. The dog that was found dead in the Dumpster had numerous bites and gashes on its body. Officials think it had been muzzled and might have been used as a bait dog in a fight.

"Basically, it's defenseless in that manner," Patterson said. "All it can do is sit there and take the bites. It can't bite back. It can't fight back."

Most of the rescued animals will bounce back and land in good homes, but a couple of the more aggressive dogs might have to be put down.

"We can't rule it out. We hope not to. We're doing the best we can to find them homes," Patterson said.

The owners of the pit bulls face charges in connection with the drug raid and for neglecting and, possibly, fighting the dogs.

Pictures of the dogs available for adoption are at the Web site of the rescue group that is handling the adoptions.

"I say put the trainers down too....
and the audience... "

If they put that on a ballot I bet it would pass...

Yes, I agree, it's not for everyone. However, these were goldens, and while they could do some damage, they also understood I was pack leader. I wasn't about to let them damage each other. I certainly wouldn't try to break up a fight between strange dogs.

"For any freepers with a bigger heart than me there is a link on the page to see the warm and cuddley dogs up for adoption..."

These animals don't need a warm heart. They need a cold heart and a warm gun.

This is just another example of how inferior the human race is.The human waste that is doing these things if caught should be forced to fight to the death. The survivor to be tied in the hot sun without water or food and recieve regular beatings.Televised would be nice for our revenge entertainment and it would send a message.

I've never seen a dog fight but I have seen (and betted on) cock fights. It's still legal where I'm from and pretty much traditional. My grandfather took me to my first when I was like 15 or so but now that I live out of state I haven't been to one in years.

I enjoyed them. It isn't so much the fight that people are interested in but the skill of the breeders. I used to go out to my great-grandfathers farm every summer and help him out with the amimals. Believe me, once you slaughtered a couple dozen chickens, a little blood doesn't bother you. And they're animals after all, I really don't understand what's the big deal? It's not like they're people and have rights. They're tools, objects, posessions, whatever; I don't see any moral problems here. If someone here does, please spell it out for me.

I grew up on a farm and had a Rooster (Trixie....long story) who used to chase us and try to spur us...he died gracefully of old age (or too many blueberries, we'll never know).

And I grew up with hog butcherin's, feed lots, hunting season, dove season etc... I've gutted, cleaned, skinned, dressed, plucked lots of critters and I've been covered head to toe in not only blood, but other, erm stuff.

The issue being, every animal killed was just that, killed. No entertainment was brought from the killing, suffering was minimized and no sport was made of the actual death (outside of the hunting part). It was practical, pragmatic, but it was also what it was....and kept as humane as possible.

That is my personal issue with blood sports......Those who get pleasure out of watching suffering and death, even in a lesser being, are NOT people I want around me or someone helpless.

Yeah, Ruby and Shelley are doing a good deal of dog wrestling right now, and I separate them as soon as the hackles go up. Don't even like to see that.

Of course, I know they're not really fighting because opening the treat jar instantly produces two demure young ladies, every hair smooth as silk, in side-by-side "sit" while eying the jar expectantly.

Well I can't speak for your personal beliefs but it looks like we've had similar backgrounds in dealing with animals here. Maybe it just affected me differently, I see a strong, bright line between humans and animals. I don't see any rational argument for going out of my way to treat animals 'humanely', they're not human and it is degrading to humans to treat them as such.

I've seen a robot fight in college and of course cocks fight and it doesn't feel any different to me, much less have any divergent moral implications. The only objection I can think of is what you mentioned, one based on empathy to a lesser species which of course is a personal belief, not any moral guideline.

I respect what you're saying...

BUT, I do strongly believe that those who are cruel to animals are base in their treatment of humans....and this comes from experience.
