Governor plans health care for all children

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will call for universal insurance for California children in the health care proposal he unveils next week -- but isn't likely to suggest a way to pay for it, advocates who have been briefed on the plan said Wednesday.

Of the approximately 6.5 million uninsured in California, about 800,000 are under 18.

The governor's plan would cover those children by expanding eligibility for current government health insurance programs, said Jim Keddy of PICO California, a group that is among many lobbying for children's coverage.

When he delivers a "state of health care" speech on Monday, the governor also is expected to propose covering more uninsured adults by requiring individuals to have insurance and employers to help pay for that -- a model his administration refers to as "shared responsibility."

Adam Mendelsohn, a spokesman for the governor, declined to confirm the details.

"Nothing is 100 percent final in the governor's health care plan," Mendelsohn said. "The governor is focused on tackling California's broken health care system without raising taxes. The rest of the proposals are all being finalized."

I guess it is too bad I had my children during the era when I was expected to take care of them myself.

If I had one today I could get free babysitting (day care), reduced housing, wic, free healthcare, etc., even on the working mom salary I was making.

Kind of weird when the Democrat governor of New York and the Republican governor of California give speeches that are interchangeable.

Ditto that for the Dem Gov here in wisconsin. This is the goldilocks era of politics, new entitlements that do not cost anything. I am waiting for the populace to wake up and ask how our politicians can defy reality with these proposals. And BTW, who will pay for all the health care for illegals swamping our health care system?

Don't the children of Illegal Aliens already cost the State of California $225 Million in Los Angeles alone?

His new alliance with PETA may not allow that.

GOV. SCHWARZENEGGER GRABS NATIONAL PETA AWARD FOR BREAKING THE CHAINS OF MISERY FOR DOGS

Compassionate Governor ‘Terminates’ Continuous Tethering of Dogs and Foie Gras Production, Wins ‘Proggy’ From PETA

For Immediate Release:
January 3, 2007

Sacramento, Calif. — In recognition of his signing into law several bills that will improve the lives of countless dogs, ducks, and other animals in California, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has won the award for "Most Progressive Politician" in PETA’s 2007 "Proggy" Awards. Proggys—short for "progress"—are presented to animal-friendly people, organizations, and companies. Schwarzenegger will receive a commemorative plaque and will be featured on PETA.org, which is visited by thousands of people every day.

On September 27, 2006, Gov. Schwarzenegger signed into law SB 1578, a landmark piece of legislation that limits the tethering of dogs to no more than three hours at a time. Because they are highly social animals, dogs suffer ...

California already has a low cost insurance plan for children with no insurance. It is like $10.00 a mnth or something.
The only reason I can think of to push this is to cover the illegal alien children.

I want to hear how this is a great Republican thing.

In a piece yesterday on Flash Report [DOES ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER NEED CONSERVATIVES ANY MORE? ], Dan Schnur laid out the probable rhetoric we will hear. The tactics are becoming more transparent every day.

(snip)

Most challenging for the governor’s relationship with conservatives is his vow to reform health care. Schwarzenegger has been citing a New America Foundation study that argues that California families are paying roughly $1200 per year to provide health care for the uninsured. By casting that burden as a “hidden tax”, he will argue that any plan that costs less than that figure does not constitute a tax increase. Shifting that tax burden from families and some business owners to those businesses that do not provide their employees with health care may represent the “shared responsibility” to which the governor has been referring for the past several weeks.

This type of health care financing plan will be seen as a tax increase on business by fiscal conservatives, but Arnold will make the case that it’s actually tax relief for families. That’s not going to be enough to mollify the GOP base, but it’s sufficient for Schwarzenegger to continue to claim that he has avoided raising taxes as governor. In a general election campaign for the U.S. Senate that’s still several years off, that’s probably good enough, and it only becomes a vulnerability in a primary against a well-known and well-funded opponent.

Why do I get the feeling that health care is going to be a major campaign issue for 2008? Of course, the RATS will pay for the health care coverage by taxing up those "eeevil" oil and drug companies.

Meanwhile, there is a massive tent on the Capitol South lawn (I mean frigging massive, like half a city block in size) that was erected for the Inauguration. The entire thing is a hippy paradise. It's packed with enviro whacko agenda booths, Earth worship things and all the nonsense that goes with it. Bonnie Reiss may be on her way out, but she's certainly left her mark. What a bunch of kooks (but it's a REEEEEEpublican administration full of liberal hippy kooks so we're supposed to be happy).
