High Commissioner renews call for restraint in Iraq
United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) ^ | 03 Jan 2007 | ReliefWeb

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Louise Arbour, today renewed her call for restraint by the Government of Iraq in the execution of sentences of death imposed by the Iraqi High Tribunal.

On 28 December 2006, alongside the confirmation of the death sentence of Saddam Hussein, the death sentences of two other co-defendants, Awad Hamad Al-Bandar and Barzan Ibrahim Al-Hassan, were also upheld on appeal. "International law, as it currently stands, only allows the imposition of the death penalty as an exceptional measure within rigorous legal constraints. The concerns that I expressed just days ago with respect to the fairness and impartiality of Saddam Hussein's trial apply also to these two defendants", the High Commissioner said. "I have therefore today directly appealed to the President of the Republic of Iraq to refrain from carrying out these sentences."

The High Commissioner also noted that under Iraq's international obligations, it is bound to afford Awad Hamad Al-Bandar and Barzan Ibrahim Al-Hassan the opportunity to seek commutation or pardon of the sentence.

Those two co-defendents are guilty. The Republic of Iraq wants to execute them. Why should the UN be allowed to meddle in that affair?

The UN fled in terror from Iraq after a single bomb. Then Kofi Anan bad-mouths reconstruction efforts for three years.

The UN doesn't have a thread of credibility in Iraq.

The U.N. : Compassionate to the merciless.
Merciless to the compassionate.

Let's get this straight. The U.N. and all the "higher" minds, didn't want to go in and stop Hussein to begin with. And now they don't want their sentences to be carried out. Conclusion? The U.N. is on the side of thugs, terrorists, mass murderers, the users of wood chippers as tools of punishment, etc. etc. etc. Conduct an institutionalized permanent civil war against your own people. Okay. Use terror as a governing device. Okay. Hone the art of raw brutality to a razor's edge. It's okay. We'll look away. Savagely kill several million of your own people in a short period of time. No prob. But try to stop the people doing those things, then we really get our backs up. Our hackles really get all charged up then. We go into hyper-dudgeon. You'll hear from us. In fact, we'll never shut the hell up. Stop the terroists?! Who do you think you are? Hang the terrorists? Why we won't have it. No. We'll throw Rumsfeld in the docks. Threaten to go after Bush. How dare you get one of our favorite Stalinistic mass murderers.

Compassion to the merciless.
Merciless to the compassionate.

"The UN doesn't have a thread of credibility in Iraq."

But they keep making noises like they do. And the MSM listens.
