JAKARTA: Indonesia's media has accused authorities of lying after officials erroneously reported that rescuers had found wreckage and survivors from a missing airliner carrying 102 people.
"The people have been lied to," said the Pikiran Umum daily yesterday, as searchers hunted for the Adam Air Boeing 737 which vanished from radar screens on Monday en route from Java to Sulawesi. "More embarrassingly, this news has been spread not just locally but all over the world," the newspaper said.
Much of the press said the false reports exacerbated the tragedy for relatives waiting for news. A front-page article in the Rakyat Merdeka newspaper called the misinformation a "national scam".
"How is it that the whole of Indonesia can be blatantly lied to? From the president, the vice-president, ministers and right down to the public, they were totally blinded," the article read.
"This is a national communication and information tragedy. It's shameful."
The Jakarta Post agreed: "Relatives' anguish grows with false news," its front page read.
■ Twelve men on board a ferry that sank on Friday en route from Borneo to Java were found alive yesterday. They had clambered onto an unmanned offshore oil rig, navy officers said. At least 212 people have been found alive but some 400 remain missing.

tangental question - why is that country islamic? When in history did their conversions begin and by whom?
What was the recent story like this involving trapped miners? Something like 14 died and one survived, but the officials told ALL that families that everyone was A-OK. After 3 hours of celebrations, they told the familes that only one survived.
News reports from Muslims = completely unreliable at best.
I don't know the answer to you your question.
Do you think it is because they are a Muslim State they act this way and lie?

The rumor mill got that ball rolling...not the officials...
I'll take "Most Ridiculous" for $800, Achmed.
Indonesia was largely Hindu from the first through seventh centuries. Buddhism arrived and was popular until the fourteenth century when the Majapahit Empire collapsed. Arab traders then began establishing Islam as the dominant religion.
