that's interesting...i'm not sure what to make of it, though
Lefties hate the guy, so he must be OK.
Paging a Rumsfeld, Mr. Donald Rumsfeld...are you available?
Is this a promotion, lateral move or demotion?...The Intel Czar was a Cabinet level position.
The question that needs to be asked is what will this move mean for Condi..
Negroponte to Step Aside as Top Spy

January 3, 2007 7:50 p.m.
WASHINGTON -- National Intelligence Director John Negroponte will resign to become deputy secretary of state, a government official said Wednesday night.
Mr. Negroponte took over in 2005 as the nation's first intelligence chief, responsible for overseeing all 16 U.S. spy agencies. He will return to his roots as a career diplomat to become the No. 2 to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, the official said.
No way...he becomes a deputy...something is afoot.
The question that needs to be asked is what will this move mean for Condi..
BINGO!
Come to think of it Condi Rice has been making noises about " when I get back to Stanford" and writing books. This may be the mechanism to make that happen.
The Director of the CIA (Gen. Hayden) reports to the Director of National Intelligence (Negroponte).
So does the Director of the NSA. It's a pretty powerful position.
I'm happy to see someone with Negroponte's background in intelligence over at the State Dept. But I wonder who is going to replace him as DNI?
And no Rummy...he would never get past the DEMS.
Could this mean she's going to resign in near future, and let him take over?
This is a good move. State needs a 'watcher'.
Correction:
I'm not sure how much oversight the DNI has over the NSA. It seems the SecDef runs the NSA.
Before Negroponte was selected by Bush, it was rumored that Robert Gates turned down the position.
Apparently, there's much more power in the SecDef position than the DNI position.
Maybe Bush will appoint Lieberman. Then Jodi Rell can replace him with a Republican. ;-)
Then again, if Dick Cheney resigns for health reasons, Condi would still be one of the most amazing Vice Presidents in US history, both nationally and internationally.
Just by dint of who she is, she would not only put tremendous political pressure on the democrat party, but she would also force a major reevaluation by black society of everything they take for granted about themselves.
All around the world, blacks and women, and especially black women, one of the most singularly oppressed groups, would have a role model in the second most powerful person on the Earth.
How can black women be raised to think they are inferior after such a thing? When it is plain as day that Condi Rice is far greater than the greatest light-skinned man in their entire nation. Or probably than all of them put together.
And that is just based on who she is. When she would actually wield the power of the Vice-Presidency, the world would bow before her.
The impact of such an appointment would almost equal George W. Bush's legacy of freedom to 25 Million people, with the destruction of two dictatorial regimes.
It would also be an act of unparalleled nobility on the part of Dick Cheney.
When someone leaves the highest position in the US national intelligence apparatus to become a deputy at another executive agency, then there is alot more that is not being said about the move - on either side.
Either something has slipped in our intelligence appartus and Bush and Negroponte both want to save face and not admit it, or Bush needs Negroponte more at State for some reason at this time, and given the position he's leaving it has to be a very major reason.
"Then again, if Dick Cheney resigns for health reasons, Condi would still be one of the most amazing Vice Presidents in US history, both nationally and internationally."
Having made a disaster at the State Department, why in the hell would Bush now make her Vice-President; Oh, forgive me, there would be one good reason - just to get her where she can do the least harm.
I read an email today that the Brass, and Intelligence was "flabbergasted" at extent of Iranian involvement in the Iraq insurgency. The info came from the documents/Iranians captured in Iraq the other day. Maybe it has something to do with that?
