THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY: A VAST SLEEPER CELL(Ann Coulter)
anncoulter.com ^ | January 3, 2007 | Ann Coulter

Fortunately for liberals, the Iraqis executed Saddam Hussein the exact same week that former President Ford died, so it didn't seem strange that Nancy Pelosi's flag was at half-staff. Also, Saddam's death made it less of a snub when Harry Reid skipped Ford's funeral.

The passing of Gerald Ford should remind Americans that Democrats are always lying in wait, ready to force a humiliating defeat on America.

More troops, fewer troops, different troops, "redeployment" — all the Democrats' peculiar little talking points are just a way of sounding busy. Who are they kidding? Democrats want to cut and run as fast as possible from Iraq, betraying the Iraqis who supported us and rewarding our enemies — exactly as they did to the South Vietnamese under Ford.

Liberals spent the Vietnam War rooting for the enemy and clamoring for America's defeat, a tradition they have brought back for the Iraq war.

They insisted on calling the Soviet-backed Vietcong "the National Liberation Front of Vietnam," just as they call Islamic fascists killing Americans in Iraq "insurgents." Ho Chi Minh was hailed as a "Jeffersonian Democrat," just as Michael Moore compares the Islamic fascists in Iraq to the Minute Men.

During the Vietnam War, New York Times scion Arthur "Pinch" Sulzberger told his father that if an American soldier ran into a North Vietnamese soldier, he would prefer for the American to get shot. "It's the other guy's country," he explained.

Now, as publisher of the Times, Pinch does all he can to help the enemy currently shooting at American soldiers.

After a half-dozen years of Democrat presidents creating a looming disaster in Vietnam — with Kennedy ordering the assassination of our own ally in the middle of the war and Johnson ham-handedly choosing bombing targets from the Oval Office — in 1969, Nixon became president and the world was safe again.

Nixon began a phased withdrawal of American ground troops, while protecting the South Vietnamese by increasing the bombings of the North, mining North Vietnamese harbors and attacking North Vietnamese military supplies in Cambodia — all actions hysterically denounced by American liberals, eager for the communists to defeat America.

Despite the massive anti-war protests staged by the Worst Generation, their takeovers of university buildings and their bombings of federal property to protest the bombing of North Vietnamese property, Nixon's Vietnam policy was apparently popular with normal Americans. In 1972, he won re-election against "peace" candidate George McGovern in a 49-state landslide.

In January 1973, the United States signed the Paris Peace accords, which would have ended the war with honor. In order to achieve a ceasefire, Nixon jammed lousy terms down South Vietnam's throat, such as allowing Vietcong troops to remain in the South. But in return, we promised South Vietnam that we would resume bombing missions and provide military aid if the North attacked.

It would have worked, but the Democrats were desperate for America to lose. They invented "Watergate," the corpus delicti of which wouldn't have merited three column-inches during the Clinton years, and hounded Nixon out of office. (How's Sandy Berger weathering that tough wrist-slap?)

Three months after Nixon was gone, we got the Watergate Congress and with it, the new Democratic Party. In lieu of the old Democratic Party, which lost wars out of incompetence and naivete, the new Democratic Party would lose wars on purpose.

Just one month after the Watergate Congress was elected, North Vietnam attacked the South.

Even milquetoast, pro-abortion, detente-loving Gerald R. Ford knew America had to defend South Vietnam or America's word would be worth nothing. As Ford said, "American unwillingness to provide adequate assistance to allies fighting for their lives could seriously affect our credibility throughout the world as an ally." He pleaded repeatedly with the Democratic Congress simply to authorize aid to South Vietnam — no troops, just money.

But the Democrats turned their backs on South Vietnam, betrayed an ally and trashed America's word. Within a month of Ford's last appeal to Congress to help South Vietnam, Saigon fell.

The entire world watched as American personnel desperately scrambled into helicopters from embassy rooftops in Saigon while beating back our own allies, to whom we could offer no means of escape. It was the most demeaning image of America ever witnessed, until Britney Spears came along.

Southeast Asia was promptly consumed in a maelstrom of violence that seems to occur whenever these "Jeffersonian Democrats" come to power. Communist totalitarians swept through Laos, Cambodia and all of Vietnam. They staged gruesome massacres so vast that none other than Sen. George McGovern called for military intervention to stop a "clear case of genocide" in Cambodia.

Five years after that, Islamic lunatics in Iran felt no compunction about storming the embassy of what was once the greatest superpower on Earth and taking American citizens hostage for 14 months. To this day, al-Qaida boosts the flagging morale of its jihadists by reminding them of America's humiliating retreat from Vietnam.

In addition to being wrong about Ford's pardon of Nixon, liberals were wrong about a few other things from that era. Democrats haven't admitted error in rejecting Ford's pleas on behalf of South Vietnam because there are still dangerous foreigners trying to kill Americans. Nixon is safely interred in the ground, but the enemies of America continue to need the Democrats' help.

It was a proxy war between the Soviets and the ChiComs, Pol Pot was supported by Beijing and the Vietnamese Communists were supported by Moscow. Also remember that China and Vietnam had a brief war in 1979 around that same time.

Yes. Exactly. The USA is not perfect, it has made mistakes, some through stupidity, some through ignorance, some through malice, and some through bureaucracy.

But this country has done more good for the world than any other nation in history. We can always do better if we keep in mind and avoid the things we have done that were worse.

Grrr. Yes. And it is UTTERLY infuriating!

One of the small things that completely pisses me off is hearing people like Tom Brokaw and his ilk talk about how Ford was sometimes ridiculed for being clumsy...IT WAS HIM AND PEOPLE LIKE HIM WHO WERE DOING IT!!!!!!!

It is similar to when Germany was occupied after WWII, you could not find a Nazi anywhere. They were just nowhere to be found. Extinct.

Same with the Appeasers before WWII. Somehow, it was always someone else.

You are correct about the Soviets moving into North Korea after the War. They were regarded as our allies against Japan as well as Nazi Germany. Because of this unholy alliance, President Roosevelt under the direction of incompetent George Marshell, agreed with Stalin to establish an international trusteeship for Korea at the Yalta Conference in February of 1945. This is how Joseph McCarthy accurately described George Marchall's incompetence before the U.S. Senate, June 14th, 1951:

"It was Marshall who sent Deane to Moscow to collaborate with Harriman in drafting the terms of the wholly unnecessary bribe paid to Stalin at Yalta. It was Marshall, with Hiss at his elbow and doing the physical drafting of agreements at Yalta, who ignored the contrary advice of his senior, Admiral Leahy, and of MacArtbur and Nimitz in regard to the folly of a major land invasion of Japan; who submitted intelligence reports which suppressed more truthful estimates in order to support his argument, and who finally induced Roosevelt to bring Russia into the Japanese war with a bribe that reinstated Russia in its pre-1904 imperialistic position in Manchuria-an act which, in effect, signed the death warrant of the Republic of China."

"It was Marshall, with Acheson and Vincent eagerly assisting, who created the China policy which, destroying China, robbed us of a great and friendly ally, a buffer against the Soviet imperialism with which we are now at war."

This was a huge blunder in our foreign policy. Unfortunately, no one at that time knew the degree of threat the Soviet communists would have on the world scene. With Yalta it was planned that the Soviets could declare war on Japan as soon as the Germans were defeated. With the defeat of the Germans, the Soviets declared war on Japan on August 8, 1945 and launched a massive military invasion to drive the Japanese out of Korea and Manchuria. Even though Yalta had not set the amount of Soviet control for Korea it was assumed that unless events changed, the Soviets would have all of Korea. Instead, the United States under President Truman proposed that the Soviets could occupy all of Korea above the 38th parallel while a provisional government was established in Seoul. Stalin agreed on the provision. Then in December of 1945, allied ministers met in Moscow and decided that a five year trusteeship would be established to help put together a Korean provisional government towards full independence. The goal for the trusteeship was to bring Korea towards organizing a single unified government with a new constitution for the entire peninsula. This trusteeship was immediately opposed by the Syngman Rhee who was also chosen by the United States as one to head the Korea provisional govenment. Rhee began his nationalist campaign to become Korea's first elected president. He rallied popular support with his strong anti-communist campaign. He won the presidency by a vote of the first Korean parliament in 1948. Synman Rhee's anti-communist politics wanted the Soviets out of Korea. You can imagine how the Soviets might have reacted when their game plan was hit with a huge political blow with Rhee's election. The Soviets wanted their communist party activists to have political representation in the democratic process in all of Korea. Rhee would have no compromise. The Soviets were to get out. Rhee correctly interpreted this as an effort by the Soviet communists to eventually control all of Korea. Unfortunately, Rhee proved to be a corrupt leader who soon ruled with dictatorial powers sending goon squads out to kill anyone who opposed him. It was his inept leadership and, I suspect, Soviet agents at work in the Truman Administration that mishandled the Korean unification process. Indeed, as Nixon called it, it was the "Dean Acheson College for Cowardly Containment of Communism." It was this failure that precipitated the Korean War and thwarted the desire for unification that these people have for so long wanted.

I am a Democrat who believes in aggressive defense and loyalty.

A simple "yes, I am a rat" would suffice here.

It sounds like we won the war in Vietnam. One year later, we gave South Vietnam away.

Funny you say that as I also always considered Ford a milque toast guy. He and Bush senior both were gutless as far as I'm concerned. Although I do think that Ford's pardon of Nixon was a good thing.

They invented "Watergate,"...

Now, there's a stretch, even from Miz Kolter.

Watergate was probably on a par with LBJ’s bugging the Goldwater campaign, or with Clinton listening in when Jesse Helms placed calls to the United States from oversees. Watergate was less than the Clinton White House use of FBI files on hundreds Republicans. The connection between Nixon and Watergate is no stronger than the connection between Clinton and Sandy Burger’s thefts (and deposits?) from the National Archives. Only one of these stories got the Woodward and Bernstein treatment from the Washington Post.

I agree. I was trying to remember a few things about Helen Gahagan Douglas. So I did a little research. Here is a quote from a fellow freeper:

"Nixon had committed the unpardonable sin. He had defeated a communist loving Democrat for the Senate seat from California. Her name was Helen Gahagan Douglass. Nixon said she was pink (a term for communist sympathizer) down to her panties. Then once elected he helped bring Alger Hiss to justice. The left loved Hiss. They refused to believe he was a Russian spy when Boris Yeltsin released KGB files proving he was."

the press already wounded the Presidency with the exposure of Agnew's dealing's while Governor of Maryland.

I recall a “principle” invented by Democrats. A man is “elevated” when he achieves national office. In other words, failings at the state and local level should be ignored. I think that principle was applied to Truman. But that’s for Democrats, not Republicans. It was never applied to Agnew. The principle could have been used for Clinton also, but maybe the hypocrisy might have been too obvious.

I liked listening to Agnew:
nattering nabobs of negativism
pusillanimous pussyfoots
hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history
effete corps of impudent snobs
"radiclib," a blend of "radical liberal”

I read once in Human Events that someone (Acheson?) marked drew lines on a map to indicate the American sphere of influence in Asia. South Korea was excluded. The North Korean leader took the map to Stalin and convinced him that the US would not intervene if North Korea attacked the south. I would be curious to hear your opinion on this.

O'Brien's "Head" secretary was running a liaison service with a brothel across the street from the Watergate hotel, where the Dem's had there Nat'l HQ.

G.Gordon Liddy relates the story well

Liddy says that John Dean's wife was part of the group. John Dean sued him over it, and later withdrew the suit and paid Liddy's attorney fees, plus some other settlement.

Yeah, I recently heard an interview with a liberal
journalist who revisited the John Dean's wife
scenario. "Pure revisionist history" he called it.
Of course he did not question why the MSM has never,
ever investigated any of these claims from Liddy.

Very much like the Sandy Burglar case. Ignore it and
it might simply go away....JJ61

I have written about the mishandling of Korea in a earlier post. Here is that post. The information in this history shows clearly how bad foreign policy creates problems far into the future. We should learn from such history when we think about what we should do in Iraq.

Have you read the book?

I just finished Mark Steyn's "America Alone", great read.

I just posted an article revealing that the 18 yr. old murderer in Utah was a Muslim. A fact conveniently unreported by the LSM.
