Unsuccessful Ford assassin says she regrets act, mourns his death

DUBLIN, Calif. - A woman who once tried to assassinate President Gerald Ford says she regrets the murder attempt and joins Americans in mourning his recent death.

Sara Jane Moore was only 40 feet away from Ford outside the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco when she fired a single shot at him on Sept. 22, 1975.

As she raised her .38 caliber revolver, Oliver Sipple, a disabled former U.S. Marine who was standing next to her, pushed up her arm as the gun discharged. The bullet flew over Ford's head by several feet, ricocheted off the side of the hotel and slightly wounded a cab driver in the crowd.

"I am very glad I did not succeed. I know now that I was wrong to try," Moore, now 76, told KGO-TV on Tuesday in a phone interview from a federal prison in Dublin, where she's serving a life term for the attempted assassination.

"California has an endless supply of nutcases, much as I hate to admit it!!"
Can they be exported somewhere? Think of what it could do to the balance of payments!

Great idea! But who can we get who's crazy enough to take them!! ;>)

LOL! wish I'd only been 13 then!! Instead I was 28, married and had 2 kids! They actually were good times to grow up in.....the only problem was that the nutcases were smart enough to get themselves firmly ensconced in the world of journalism and education. We're still paying for that today!!

However, she should not be paroled, ever, except to a nursing home when she's so old she can no longer wipe her own butt.

yeah, but at that time she will once again be "functioning purely on adrenalin and not thinking clearly. "

Wow. I love your veggies link. I've had VERY bad experiences with vegans in the last few years. Very unpleasant people to be around... IMHO.

Moore and "Squeaky" Fromme are both former Manson cult members.

Like they say on the site, some of the most nasty, evil people in history were vegans and/or vegetarians...Pol Pot, Manson, Hitler, Cain, Van der Graaf...

You know, you were right about Squeaky Fromme! I forgot that President Ford had two separate assassination atempts on his life, within 3 months of each other in 1975.
Both attempts were by skanky left-wing hippie chicks: Sara Jane Moore, in Frisco & Lynette- "Squeaky" Fromme, in Sacramento. Poor Mr. Ford kinda had hex on his mojo that year (in regards to the ladies.)

She may be the only attempted assasin to express regret.

Yes; and at that time a remnant of the Manson cult had formed an alliance with the Symbionese Liberation Army, the group Moore was in contact with.

Even Pope John forgave his attempted assassin.

Get President Ford to endorse her parole and it will help her cause.

I'm sure her only regret is that she missed. She is just giving statements that will sound good during her next parole hearing.

To bring things full circle in re unbalanced assassins, the Dan White trial also gave us the Twinkie Defense (diminished capacity due to spongecake-induced hyperglicemia).

Not that it did White much good; he was convicted, not of first-degree murder but of manslaughter -- to the great annoyance of the city's gay community -- and served five years in prison. He committed suicide in 1985, two years after being paroled.

Sara Jane Moore wasn't one of Charlie's girls, that would be Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, who also took a shot at President Ford in the same year.
