Justice Appointed by Ford Remembers the Late President Exclusive Interview: John Paul Stevens Recalls Ford's Selection Over Conservative Favorite
By JAN CRAWFORD GREENBURG
WASHINGTON, Jan. 2, 2007 - Today Justice John Paul Stevens remembered the president who nominated him to the Supreme Court more than three decades ago, a decision that changed Stevens' life and the makeup of the Court.
In his only network TV interview, Stevens recalled meeting President Ford for the first time. "My two very firm impressions from that meeting were, one, he was a fine lawyer; and two, he was the kind of person I would really like to have as a friend, because you like him right away."
Nominating Stevens is one of Ford's most enduring legacies. Although Stevens is a maverick thinker who has proved to be surprisingly liberal and has kept the Court from moving further to the right, the justice said today he still considered himself a conservative.

Bork fell on his Sword.
Yeah, that turned out to be a real slap in the face to common decency.
Thanks, Jerry.
What has Stevens been smoking lately?
Ford was a liberal Republican, he picked that loathsome piece of New York liberal trash Nelson ROckefller as his running mate and Vice President.
Roger said today (subbing) on Rush's show that at the 1976 GOP Convention, Ronald Reagan, who had fought a tough primary battle against Ford that year, gave a speech immediately following Ford's speech and that when they were done, everybody in the place KNEW they had selected the wrong candidate.
By the way, I believe that Ford had made Rockefeller his VP when he assumed the Presidency. Also, if you haven't read Christopher Hitchens' latest column (dealing with the Ford Presidency) you might find it interesting. He totally flays Ford. Brutal.
Stevens is a Marxist.
His rambling justification to rewrite the constitution in the Kelo case is proof. The phrase "public use" is completely foreign to his collectivist brain as he twists it to redefine it into the Marxist "public good" definition.
Stevens is a seditionist punk who should have been impeached, stripped of all money and property and shipped one-way to North Korea.
I heard that. It was terrific!!!!
"I believe that Ford had made Rockefeller his VP when he assumed the Presidency. "
He did.
The man who made the term Limousine Liberal and Rokefeller Republican a by-word, and who, along with Keating and Javits, walked out of the Republican nominating Convention when Barry Goldwater was nominated, mugging for the camera with a grin, and viciously undermining Goldwater's campaign from within - was rewarded by Ford by the Vice-Presidential Office.
Another reason why I didn't vote for Ford.
We had RINOs back then but just called them Limousine Liberals.
Just a Ford accomplishment.
"The evil that men do lives after them."
Hey, JP, don't you think it is time to retire and enjoy your family in your remaining years? C'mon, family is WAY more important than a title - especially since you've been in that job for about 30 years. You did your part...now make way for some fresh blood.
He'll sit there until he rots, blind, deaf and dumb - if he isn't already - just like that other jackass Douglas.
