You question my distrust of religious fundamentalists, and my belief that they would establish a theocracy if they could?
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Well,,,,atheists and Secular Humanists would establish their theocracy if they could, and they are doing a very good job of shoving it down the throats of resisted children in our government schools.

Solution: Begin the process of privatizing universal K-12 education. Let the evolutionists and Secular Humanists have their schools, and let those who believe in God have theirs.

Well....Down on the Animal Farm the atheistic Secular Humanists get to sleep in the farmer's house for free. Those who believe in God get to sleep in the barn and pay tuition for the privilege.

The solution is to begin the process of privatizing universal K-12 education. Vouchers and tax credits can help in the process. Then wean parents away from the idea that they can expect other people to pay for their child's education and start handing out tuition bills.

In the best situation, charity would pay for the poor. In a less perfect world, the poor would get education vouchers in the same way that they get food and housing vouchers.

NIV Deuteronomy 5:22

These are the commandments the LORD proclaimed in a loud voice to your whole assembly there on the mountain from out of the fire, the cloud and the deep darkness; and he added nothing more. Then he wrote them on two stone tablets and gave them to me.

No Jew ever thought differently. Then or now. Jesus meant the Torah, not just Deuteronomy.

I'm not sure where you get your info, but it just SEEMS to cover all the bases and leave no room for just READING THE TEXT.

What someone CONSIDERS to be true, does not necessarily true. (Or untrue, for that matter.)

What did Jesus 'mean' here:

NIV Matthew 19:17-20
 17.  "Why do you ask me about what is good?" Jesus replied. "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments."
 18.  "Which ones?" the man inquired.   Jesus replied, "`Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony,
 19.  honor your father and mother,'  and `love your neighbor as yourself.' "    (6 of them)
 20.  "All these I have kept," the young man said. "What do I still lack?"

And here:

NIV Matthew 22:36-40
 36.  "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?"
 37.  Jesus replied: "`Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'
 38.  This is the first and greatest commandment.
 39.  And the second is like it: `Love your neighbor as yourself.'
 40.  All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

NIV Matthew 9:10-11
 10.  While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and "sinners" came and ate with him and his disciples.
 11.  When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and `sinners'?"

(THIS was TOTALLY against the 'law'.)

and...

NIV Matthew 12:1-8
 1.  At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them.
 2.  When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, "Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath."
 3.  He answered, "Haven't you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
 4.  He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread--which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests.
 5.  Or haven't you read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple desecrate the day and yet are innocent?
 6.  I tell you that one  greater than the temple is here.
 7.  If you had known what these words mean, `I desire mercy, not sacrifice,'  you would not have condemned the innocent.
 8.  For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."

If the law is the same as The LAW, as you claim, then the above verses are more fuel for your claim that Jesus 'changed' the law.

Other NT writers had things to say as well:

NIV Romans 2:17-18
 17.  Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and brag about your relationship to God;
 18.  if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law;

NIV Romans 3:19-20
 19.  Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.
 20.  Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.

NIV Romans 4:13
It was not through law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.

NIV Hebrews 7:18-19
 18.  The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless
 19.  (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.

NIV Hebrews 9:19-20
 19.  When Moses had proclaimed every commandment of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves, together with water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people.
 20.  He said, "This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep."

John 6
 28.  Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?"
 29.  Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."

Oh... it appears some 'Jews' DID 'think differently'

NIV 2 Kings 22:8-12
  8.  Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the secretary, "I have found the Book of the Law in the temple of the LORD." He gave it to Shaphan, who read it.
  9.  Then Shaphan the secretary went to the king and reported to him: "Your officials have paid out the money that was in the temple of the LORD and have entrusted it to the workers and supervisors at the temple."
 10.  Then Shaphan the secretary informed the king, "Hilkiah the priest has given me a book." And Shaphan read from it in the presence of the king.
 11.  When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his robes.
 12.  He gave these orders to Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Acbor son of Micaiah, Shaphan the secretary and Asaiah the king's attendant:
 13.  "Go and inquire of the LORD for me and for the people and for all Judah about what is written in this book that has been found. Great is the LORD's anger that burns against us because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book; they have not acted in accordance with all that is written there concerning us."

However, there's a substantial minority who can't seem to understand that I really don't want to live like they do and don't believe what they believe.

They are compeled by this:

NIV Luke 14:16-23
 16.  Jesus replied: "A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests.
 17.  At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, `Come, for everything is now ready.'
 18.  "But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, `I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.'
 19.  "Another said, `I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I'm on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.'
 20.  "Still another said, `I just got married, so I can't come.'
 21.  "The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, `Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.'
 22.  "`Sir,' the servant said, `what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.'
 23.  "Then the master told his servant, `Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full.

They have forgotten this:

NIV Matthew 10:14
If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town.

Of course this is ludicrous, but it is a lurking fear, however illegitimate, of a large number of people who know very little about our religion or the Bible.

Amen!!

For if Christians cannot find a way to discuss different perspectives carefully, thoughtfully, and generously with each other, what hope is there at all that some suspicious bystander, watching from the outside, will be induced to come inside to ANY of our particular halls of Christian faith?

Indeed!!!

Where is the UNITY that Jesus wished for us all?

What I can't fathom at all, and can't respect, is the second step of modern "mainstream" churches who go from Sola Scriptura to not feeling they have to even follow the Bible.

(We ain't so far apart after all!! ;^)

As for me, I promise to not to enter the debate on the "number of angels dancin' on a pin" thing!

Cryptic?

I merely disagreed with your third premise, that there are parts of the Bible that are 'wrong'.

Oh, there are definitely things that are 'wrong'; such as Job's 'friends' spewing nonsense that they are later called to account for, or the words of men that clearly are NOT following the Lord's will, but by seeing just WHO is doing the speaking, it is CLEAR that what is being said is not 'the words of GOD'.

Americans have been brainwashed about Evolution by the MSM in general, and in particular by the play and film, "Inherit the Wind" based on the 1925 Scopes trial. Evolition became a fad, giving rise to dances, and songs, like Abba Dabba honeymoon, as well as become an intellectual fad.

Indeed!

HA Ha ha!!!

OWN property!?

What a JOKE!!

We merely are RENTING it from the Gummint!

Don't pay your PROPERTY tax rent and see what happens to your POSSESSION!

There is some validity to that argument too.

I saw the folowing comment by wintertime, in an earlier post:

Anyone who would recommend that government take children from their parents by threat of FORCE, and subjecting them to a government curriculum that destroys their family's most treasured religious beliefs DESERVES to be called a Nazi or a communist.

While I understand the sentiment, communism is about the abolition of property rights. Forcing children into government schools is statist authoritarianism. Either way, it's wrong but I think calling it "communism" does a disservice because it paints an inaccurate picture of what communism is. The New London propery seizures would more accurately be called "communism", but the word has been abused to the point that people don't recognize it when they see it.

And so the ones who want parochial are forced to pay TWICE for their kids education. Those few who don't want any mention of God can start their own schools and pay twice themselves and let the majority have the kind of schools they want.

What do you think the majority consensus on exactly what theology should be taught in public schools would be?

It's not a matter of *teaching* theology. Allowing the mention of God and kids being able to carry their Bibles and talk about it and hold after school Bible studies, is not *teaching* any specific theology. Bible reading and prayer at the beginning of the school day as used to happen across schools in this country on a daily basis for many, many years, is not *teaching* theology either.

As far as the Bible, Jews, Christians, AND Islam all recognize the OT. Christians and Muslims the NT, so allowing Scripture reading in classes is only going to *offend*, maybe, a very, very small percentage of the population who do not adhere to any of those religions, especially if the Scripture readings are restricted to the OT.

If someone wants a God-free environment, then they have options; private school or homeschool. Since the consensus tends to be that people want the kids in schools to be able to freely exercise their religious beliefs as the Constitution allows, then those who don't want any exposure to religion or God, can start their own atheistic, non-religious schools where they don't have to worry about it; instead of using the power of the judiciary to impose on the majority the wishes and desires of what appears to be a very small minority.
