BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq reported Tuesday that about 12,000 civilians were killed last year the third full year since the U.S.-led invasion with a dramatic rise in the last three months, when 5,000 died. Only about half as many Iraqi soldiers died in 2006 as American troops.
But the number of Iraqi security forces killed jumps to 1,543, nearly double the American death count of 823 for the year, when the deaths of police, who conduct paramilitary operations, are added to the number of slain Iraqi soldiers.
In all, the Iraqi ministries of Health, Defense and Interior reported a total of 13,896 Iraqi civilians, police and soldiers died last year, 162 more than the tally kept by The Associated Press.
The AP count, assembled from its daily news reports, was always believed to be substantially lower than the actual number of deaths because the news cooperative does not have daily access to official accounting by the Iraqi ministries. Many deaths were thought to have gone unreported by AP.
Counts kept by other groups, including the United Nations, list far higher death tolls, which are disputed by the Iraqi government.

Remember a few years ago in France when 15,000 civilians died because it was hot?
This is a relatively low number and if we keep judging success based on numbers like this it'll always look bad because the media will trump it up.
Another way of looking at it is that more than 25,000,000 Iraqi civilians were NOT killed in 2006.
This article and its numbers of deaths adds some perspective to our understanding of the war.
Was the insurgent terrorist deaths included in this number? Because as I understand it, they account for a sizeable portion of htose killed i Iraq? Also, these death include #'s include shiite on Shia deaths too http://sacredscoop.com
If the "insurgents" were killed and dumped but no one knew they were insurgents other than the ones that killed them then they are counted.
I would think that we could add together the 'civilian deaths' just as a result of murder in our five largest cities and surpass this number. Would that mean we are in th midst of another 'civil war'?
Post of the day!!!
Based upon what I saw on the MSM, I honestly would have thought that at least 50,000 iraqi police and military were killed.
How many of the "civilians" were non-uniformed, enemy combatants, and how many were real civilians who were killed by non-uniformed, enemy combatants? The MSM doesn't want us to know these numbers.
I know the MSM pumped the numbers up but my question is, "Have you ever seen 32 dead humans at one time in the same place?
I have and it's not a sight I will ever forget.
The MSM is made up of nothing but political agenda liars so it's not surprising they've been pumping up the numbers to sway public opinion and from the looks of last election it worked. The MSM only has one choice now and that's to come clean because a lot of people have caught on to their game. Just today CNN slammed the AP for using fake sources.
Iraq has a population of about 25 million, France about 60 million. For the Iraqi and French death tolls to even out (and the French deaths were from a weird disaster compounded by... well, being French) you would have needed closer to 30,000 French deaths to come close to parity.
My first job right after I was discharged from the military was as a security guard at the county morgue but the most I saw at one time was maybe 10. It was a good job because the tenants really didn't care what show I watched or music I listened to.
(From FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Program statistics)
"An estimated 16,692 persons were murdered nationwide in 2005"
There were an estimated 5.6 murders per 100,000 inhabitants.
I guess that dispels the silly notion that a bloody war is going on in Iraq.
That's not the point trying to be made here, it's that the MSM, certain Iraqi elements and the UN has been lying or misleading about the amount of violence in this war and that makes it hard to believe anything that comes from them.
Silly is as silly posts.
I don't think it's too much to ask for just a bit of accurate reporting from the MSM, do you? There's obviously a war going on but based on the history of past wars casualty figures have been relatively low for all sides except the terrorist.
Nope, I'm on your side. Just tell us the truth.
