WASHINGTON — Gerald R. Ford leaves his beloved U.S. Capitol for the last time Tuesday as the period set aside for ordinary Americans to say goodbye gives way to an elaborate invitation-only funeral at the awe-inspiring Washington National Cathedral.

As the first order of business Tuesday, Ford's remains were being removed from the Rotunda to lie in repose briefly outside the Senate before leaving the Capitol where Ford served as a congressman for 25 years. As vice president, Ford also had the constitutional title of president of the Senate.

I couldn't watch it live. I caught most of the replay on C-Span. I didn't see all of it, but what I did catch was very reverent and respectful.

Does anyone know the name of the song played at the Andrews Air Force Base departure ceremony?

Lynda was married in the White House; Luci converted to Catholicism to marry her first husband, and that was in the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, in North East Washington.

Ugh, Enough with the liberal Ford already. This is a man who brought us FISA, declawed the CIA, banned assassinations and appointed Stevens to the SCOTUS. I am so sick of hearing what a great guy he was. He hurt this nation with his actions. And I could understand if he appointed Stevens without realizing what a sick commie creep he would become on the bench. BUT then we read what Ford said just last year about Stevens...

In a tribute last year, Ford praised the independent Stevens and said he was "prepared to allow history's judgment of my term in office" to rest exclusively on the nomination.

I am prepared to do so as well: Gerald Ford was a lousy President.

Indeed it does.

I remembered reading the lyrics in William Manchester's "Death of a President", and all I could remember was "evergreen pine". That was more than sufficient to google it.

Then why are you on this thread? There are many threads working here that don't even mention President Ford.

so, was ANY presidential daughter married at the Cathedral?

I still can't think of one.

Wasn't Marble Collegiate the church of Norman Vincent Peale?

1. I don't think so.
2. Yes.

I saw an interesting trivia point in the Post this morning; that since the Civil War, only three Presidents have outlived their wives. I can come up with Wilson and Nixon without Googling.... now, who else?

John Adams, I'm pretty sure, was BEFORE the Civil War.

And something is telling me it's Herbert Hoover, since he lived to be about Ford's age. I'm going to check it.

Yep, Lou Henry Hoover died in 1944 and her husband outlived her by twenty years.

Why was Chelsea there at all? I didn't see any other President's children.

I am getting sick and tired of seeing the very adult Chelsea everywhere. However, Doro Bush did accompany the Bushes today and she got to sit next to Slick,,,ha ha....so Barbara Bush got a break today.

I suspect we are going to see a whole lot of Chels in the next two years. And she will probably have a flashy WH wedding if the Beast gets in...yuck...
