BAGHDAD, Iraq - Government officials on Monday reported that 16,273 Iraqi civilians, soldiers and police died violent deaths in 2006, a figure larger than an independent Associated Press count for the year by more than 2,500.

The tabulation by the Iraqi ministries of Health, Defense and Interior, showed that 14,298 civilians, 1,348 police and 627 soldiers were killed in the violence that raged in the country last year.

The Associated Press accounting, gleaned from daily news reports from Baghdad, arrived at a total of 13,738 deaths.

The United Nations has said as many as 100 Iraqis die violently each day, which translates into 36,500 deaths annually

"The United Nations has said as many as 100 Iraqis die violently each day, which translates into 36,500 deaths annually"

"As many as", is very deceptive. This could be correct with one a day or 100 a day.

Is it time to cut and run from the quagmire in these cities?

In the case of Baltimore, yes, absolutely yes.

That is lower than I expected and FAR lower than what the MSM and libs want to make us believe. They claim that on average 100 Iraqis die daily... that would be 36,500 deaths in 2006.
Thats more than twice the actual number.

BTW I want to note that the Ministry of Health, and therefore morgues and hospitals, is headed by Sadrists. Their stated goal is a withdrawal of US forces. What better way to achieve this, than to inflate numbers and play into the hands of the left and media. Not saying, this is nescessairly that way, and likely those numbers are true, but who knows for sure?

That is the fundamental truth of this issue.

There has been considerable fabrication of body counts from the first day of the invasion and the media pretends not to notice.

Great point.

The math looks good to me.

(Actually, I came up with 56.489742 per 100K)

What are we missing tomcorn?

The citizens of Maryland, in all their wisdom, just elected the former mayor of Baltimore to be the governor of Maryland. He has an excellent record on crime. He'll also excel in raising our taxes.

The city of "Balimer" truly is a quagmire in that it sucks the life blood out of the rest of the state.

And since it is "The City that Breeds", we are assured a continuous supply of RAT infestation for the foreseeable future.

The mayor has promised to do to the rest of the state what he did to Balimer and I have no doubt he will do so.

In 2004, the media, UN and the anti-war left claimed that over 1/2 million Iraqis have died because of the US invasion. This figure was played down, down, down and now they want us to go awwww thinking that the death count is too high.

Yet the 800,000 murdered in Darfur in the last three years gets a honorable mention from George Looney.

ditto on the math - unless he's stuck on that age old 'lancet' lie of 100,000 dead...

total population in Millions/ reported deaths/10 =deaths per 100,000

When you do the calculation you will see your error.

100,000? That's the lancet lie for 2004. According to the latest lancet lie it was 600,000 dead.

Maybe we have a secret vaporizer which turns Iraqis into air?

My feeling is that they're throwing in garden variety murders along with deaths from terrorist attacks. I wonder what the death rate would have been without the murders.

If you take out the police and soldiers, using the 14,298 civilians stated above, the rate is 49.6 per 100,000.

The numbers seem to be right. The correct calculation is number of deaths / population * 100,000. Here's a link to Baltimore's numbers.
