Dec. 31 - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was released from a Santa Monica hospital Saturday, four days after he underwent surgery to repair a fractured leg suffered while skiing.

Schwarzenegger, 59, expects to walk with crutches when he is sworn in Friday to begin his second term as California's governor.

In a statement released by his office Saturday night, Schwarzenegger said the injury hadn't dampened his optimism for the coming year.

The governor left the hospital about 5 p.m. and traveled to his home in the Brentwood neighborhood, Schwarzenegger spokeswoman Julie Soderlund said.

"It was fantastic to return home today as my family prepares to celebrate the New Year together," Schwarzenegger said. "I am feeling good and looking forward to beginning 2007 with my inauguration, State of the State Address and the presentation my state budget proposal to the Legislature.

Schwarzenegger will have a full agenda following the holiday weekend.

His two-day inauguration bash -- complete with kickoff party, legislative luncheon, swearing-in ceremony and black-tie gala -- begins Thursday.

Following that, he is scheduled to deliver his State of the State address on Jan. 9, and present his budget proposal Jan. 10.

Thank the good Lord that he's on the mend. I must say I grimaced when I saw that Cruz Bustamante was acting governor for a few hours while he was in surgery.

I don't remember which leg he broke. However, let's please try to avoid making fun of someone who's been injured.

Arnie's pretty tough. I think he can take it.

I really do wish the best for him and his health.

"Why?"

Well, it just doesn't seem to be a classy thing to do. I don't know, I guess I just don't get pleasure out of other people's suffering.

Yeah, there's something DU-ish about it. Good comment, I'll take it to heart, on this thread and elsewhere.

Huh? Did you also grimace during the week that Arnold was vacationing?
Cruz was acting governor the entire time he was out of state (which he does often)--that's the law.

Following that, he is scheduled to ... present his budget proposal Jan. 10.

And the cycle of social terrorism is renewed.
