Are carbon offsets providers cashing on the Global Warming crisis?
CarbonSMS ^ | 31/12/2006 | Andrew

A new report on the carbon offset retail market shows that retail offset providers face several challenges in supplying credible, cost effective offsets to the market. After finding a price of £1.5 ton/CO2 per carbon credits in US, I was surprised to see prices in different carbon offset websites from different countries ranging from £2.50 up to £12.40 with an average of £5.10 tonne/CO2. In the Brisith case price ranges from £7.40 to £9.00 tonne/CO2 which I see ludicrous because this could mean that we British people pay more without making a real benefit on the environment. This make me wonder if the price this offfset providers charge is really the cost of the project or the money is being taken by intermediaries. I think this market needs more transparency so we as consumers can evaluate the offset quality, where the money goes, how the project are selected and benefits they provide to the environment and communities. It will be sad to see that our hopes to mitigate Global Warming by offseting our emissions are not helping as they should. CarbonSMS.com recently posted some questions that we should ask offset providers when buying carbon credits. In addition to carbon offsetting we need to take other measures that could have more impact.

DUH. Somebody should beat the author with a carbon stick, yelling, "It's about the MONEY, IDIOT."

I suggest hickory. He can then pay me for growing the stick, in carbon credits.

Nah - I prefer cash.

Maybe I can start a manufacturing business and then just sell carbon credits to dumb euros in exchange for not actually building anything?

Sounds like a good deal!

This whole thing smacks of the ol' scam of big investors buying land to be paid subsidies not to grow particular crops. I don't think it's at ALL an issue of saving the planet (we are all doomed, according to the Global Warming nutcakes), but where there's a buck to be made on junk science, scammers and special interests line up......

Global warming is the biggest con of our new century and it is destined to be the cash-cow of countless research and application hustlers. By relentless bullying of science, government and media, the global warming scammers hope to cash in big-time before the next 5 or 10 years show them to be mistaken, at best, and shameless crooks, at worst. Science is FACTS, not opinion or concensus. If the facts are on their side, why do they continually run from them, avoid them, deny them, and seek to silence the honest voices in the debate? All the mini Algores are pretty slick, but a three piece suit can't hide a two-bit hustler.

I still have no idea who profits from this.
My gut feeling is that's it's simply another means of wealth redistribution, with a serious dose of skimming by the never-held-a-real-job crowd...
