THAT HIDEOUS STRENGTH
was a struggle for me--exceedingly uncommonly so--about Jr High, or so, as I recall--and almost threw me for a loop.
Mercifully, God still used it.

That Hideous Strength was a Science Fiction story that was based on an earlier essay of Lewis called The Abolition of Man. While it was short (my copy consisted of only 74 pages), it was a difficult read. Many people tend to ignore the work, but there is much to consider within those few pages.
i saw the application of what Lewis described in Abolition in the characters of That Hideous Strength. Wither, with his vague style that plays off subordinates against one another is reflected in the modern CEO of today. Frost is truly the ugly side of humanity, with his subjective search for "objectivity"...a perfect contradiction. Steel, Stone, Majour Hardcastle, Fillastrato, et al, are what becomes of humanity when seduced by such a system.
i've met people like this. i've worked for people like this. It convinced me early on that i want nothing to do with that environment. Frankly, i have great concern for those who are forced to exist in that kind of environment.
